en It's been the fuel costs that have hurt farmers more than anything. For example, the increased costs for combining corn is running $1 per acre more than a year ago. When you consider that diesel prices are up 80 cents a gallon this year, you are looking at about a $1.60 per acre increase up to 1,000 acres sometimes. There has been as much as $1,000 increase, just on fuel over the last year,

en For every penny increase on a gallon of jet fuel, that costs Continental Airlines about $17 million, a year. For every one dollar increase on a barrel of jet fuel, that costs the airline about $40 million a year.

en With income from grain crops, farmers will have about a normal income. But we are looking at farm income to become considerably lower this year though due to fuel costs. There has been a $4.8 billion fuel increase for agriculture this year.

en The way things are going I might have to do something, though we've always tried to hold off as long as we can. Our buses get about six to seven miles per gallon. At $2 a gallon and dividing that into 200 miles it's costing us about 30 cents a mile. At $2.80 a gallon it costs us 40 cents a mile. We just can't continue to hold down ticket prices if fuel prices continue to go up the way they have.

en Like everyone else, the school system will have to deal with increased utility costs. We already are running with a deficit from fuel oil for this year's budget.

en As a team the increased fuel costs, naturally, affect your budget. Figure this: the transporter that we run gets about 6 1/2 to 7 miles per gallon at best, 4 1/2 at worst. Obviously, the increased fuel cost makes a considerable difference, especially with all of these trips we're making to the West Coast now.

en We didn't figure on $3 (a gallon) diesel fuel. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. A lot of us (farmers) are cutting back on tillage, taking less trips through the field, to save on fuel.
