It's been the fuel costs that have hurt farmers more than anything. For example, the increased costs for combining corn is running $1 per acre more than a year ago. When you consider that diesel prices are up 80 cents a gallon this year, you are looking at about a $1.60 per acre increase up to 1,000 acres sometimes. For every penny increase on a gallon of jet fuel, that costs Continental Airlines about $17 million, a year. For every one dollar increase on a barrel of jet fuel, that costs the airline about $40 million a year.

With income from grain crops, farmers will have about a normal income. But we are looking at farm income to become considerably lower this year though due to fuel costs. There has been a $4.8 billion fuel increase for agriculture this year.

Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

Fertilizer costs are up big-time, and fuel costs went from $13,000 to $19,000 (for an average farm), and that's a huge increase. The concern is, what happens if we don't get that bumper crop next year? It's not likely that livestock is going to continue to be as profitable as it was last year.

Although fuel costs were up sharply from last year, the increase was dampened to a large degree by our ongoing fuel hedging program.

Every dollar means two and a half cents a gallon for oil prices. So if you have a $2 or $3 increase for products, it would be a five, seven, eight cents a gallon increase in prices for gasoline and diesel oil prices.

Oil and natural gas prices have fallen sharply from their post-hurricane highs. However, production from the Gulf of Mexico is still down by more than 15 percent, keeping supplies tight. As of mid-March, the national average retail price of diesel fuel was around $2.55 per gallon, 60 cents below the record set after Rita but 35 cents (16 percent) higher than a year ago.

With home heating oil expected to increase by as much as 31 percent this year and residents already facing a 71 percent increase over last year?s natural gas costs, energy costs are going to have an even greater impact on families this year,

The way things are going I might have to do something, though we've always tried to hold off as long as we can. Our buses get about six to seven miles per gallon. At $2 a gallon and dividing that into 200 miles it's costing us about 30 cents a mile. At $2.80 a gallon it costs us 40 cents a mile. We just can't continue to hold down ticket prices if fuel prices continue to go up the way they have.

Like everyone else, the school system will have to deal with increased utility costs. We already are running with a deficit from fuel oil for this year's budget.

As a team the increased fuel costs, naturally, affect your budget. Figure this: the transporter that we run gets about 6 1/2 to 7 miles per gallon at best, 4 1/2 at worst. Obviously, the increased fuel cost makes a considerable difference, especially with all of these trips we're making to the West Coast now.

[Even with the rising costs, the travel industry is having its best year since before 2001.] Last year was a massive year for holiday travel, ... The summer kept going in that direction, and we have the same expectation for this year despite fuel costs. If you wait until November, I think you run the risk of not getting what you want or paying a whole lot more to get what you want.

Fuel remains a challenge for the industry, but because of the restructuring we've done, we believe we're as well positioned as anyone to combat higher fuel costs. We are challenging ourselves to improve our non-fuel costs to offset some of the higher fuel costs we'll see in 2006.

We didn't figure on $3 (a gallon) diesel fuel. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. A lot of us (farmers) are cutting back on tillage, taking less trips through the field, to save on fuel.
