Banks have been careful not to put too much on the end-user. Look at PIN codes. We had four digits. People in the data-security world said that four digits are not secure because they are easily compromised by random number generators, and users would probably use years and birthdays. Then why did banks do that? Because four digits is the least common denominator that the public won't have to write down.

It is quite possible that the rise in household debt ratios could go a good distance further. The risk, of course, is that the process goes too far and that a painful correction ensues.

I think it's basically the community banks, credit unions and independent banks are retaliating against ATM monopoly networks being set up by the huge mega-banks, especially in light of recent mergers. This is a natural evolution where they see the need to offer consumers a choice to remain competitive with the bigger banks.

We had a correction, partly because the market had this huge run and everyone was looking for a correction, and partly in response to the weak February payrolls number. We had a bounce off that correction Monday and Tuesday, but concerns remain.
