The dissenting opinion has continued since 1792 as a great American tradition. It is as true to the character of our democracy as of speech itself.

The shaky security under which human rights and democracy activists are working in Iran would become even shakier and more uncertain [if U.S. funding is involved]. So, in my opinion, if they could provide security and money, that would be ideal. But since they can't, sending money through government channels is one of the most damaging ways that has been adopted in the name of helping democracy and human rights in Iran.

I really think the establishment of a third party is important. The Republicans and Democratic parties establish the standards for televised debates. Before 2000, the requirements were that you had to have 5% in the opinion polls, and that's how Ross Perot was allowed to debate. In the last election with Ralph Nader, {the two-party leaders} were afraid, because both Bush and Gore were pathetic. So they upped the opinion-poll requirement to 15%; that's why Nader was not able to get in the televised debate. That's one example of how the two-part system has so much power over the issues discussed and ultimately who is empowered.

The divisions in the Republican Party are pronounced, but there are questions for the Democratic Party as well (about its position). Do they want a bill or do they want an issue? We don't want to be a football. We want the leaders of both parties to step up and provide a way this can be addressed.

But I think one of the things we've all learned from that is that it is important, also, to be clear about dissenting opinions and make sure that dissenting opinions also are given visibility.

We want to honor the right of the students to have an opinion and to voice it in an appropriate manner. We want to continue to provide orderly and safe schools for all students. We want to use the 'teachable moment' to help further their understanding of democracy and freedom of speech.

Of course the debate and the bitterness is disturbing. But, after all, we are a democracy, and that is what democracy is about ... people will have differences of opinion,

If you ask a young man in South-Central about the difference between the Democratic and Republican parties, he can't tell you. As you evaluate that whole discussion about what must be done to bring whites back into the Democratic Party, you can see why there is no urban agenda.
