Increased demand in expanding economies abroad and continued robust conditions at home support the production outlook, given the low inventory environment. The Fed is sure to view the economy as expanding at too fast a pace now that manufacturing is coming back and consumption remains quite strong.

While we estimate that the global packaging market should grow at a 4% to 4.5% rate annually (compared with 3% to 3.5% growth in global GDP), the developing economies are likely to grow in the 10% range, offsetting the slow growth mature economies of the west.

The U.S. trade deficit will likely remain at high levels in coming months. The major reason is that the American economy should continue to grow at a solid pace, supporting continued growth in imports.

We've seen six straight months of industrial production expansion, a very solid turnaround in exports, stronger global growth than a lot of people expected and the domestic economy finally coming back on track in a very solid way.

But I think that the global picture in 1995 was a little bit more murky than it is today. Economy was slower than today. As we look at the world scene it is actually quite good. A lot of foreign economies are expected to grow a little bit faster than the U.S. economy this year. So that is a major difference. And again it probably keeps the Fed from decreasing or cutting interest rates anytime soon.

We remain cognizant of the fact that in an industry which is currently operating at full capacity to meet demand, any significant curtailment of production would be difficult to make up.

With the economy operating at close to full capacity, it's important that the Fed be vigilant about the possibility of some acceleration in inflation.

Now that we're in a more open economy, and there's a lot more opportunity to get goods from overseas, if manufacturers are operating at full capacity, there's less likelihood that somebody will bid up prices at a domestic producer if they can get it somewhere else.

The economy remains very solid and it appears likely to expand at a pace of 4-1/2 percent to 5 percent in the second half of the year.
