en The insurance market shrugged off the record hurricane losses of 2004, but the combined impact of Katrina, Rita and Wilma was clearly more than the market was ready to absorb in 2005. So far it seems only property insurance has been affected, but it remains to be seen if the rise in property rates will be the catalyst for an overall upturn in prices and a harder market.

en It's a potentially huge market, but it's not a developed market. Telecom companies [in the U.S.] are bullish on China. They've been ahead of schedule for equipment manufacturing. But I don't know about the near term. China is still laying down phone lines.

en I don't have the magic crystal ball. Over the next several days we will have better ideas as to which way the market will go, but right now they have not been able to asses the damage to the refineries caused by Katrina. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

We've gotten to a point where we may get a short-term rally for the next week or two, but beyond that, the market is likely to retest those lows and even go lower. There still isn't much confidence out there. The market crossed back and forth over the breakeven line 18 times today [Friday], which tells you how jittery investors still are.
