It was good year for car sales overall, but GM, Ford suffered particularly because of the collapse of their big SUVs.

I think that the sales drop is temporary. Explorer buyers, or some of the buyers, may be buying Ford's new small Escape SUVs or waiting until the new Explorer itself comes out after the first of the year.

Ford's light truck sales continue to plummet and now face the additional pressure of GM's new SUVs.

We believe that (GM's) new SUVs will be the litmus test showing whether or not consumer tastes have shifted away from large trucks. Sales of the refreshed Ford Explorer did not do well last fall, but its launch unfortunately coincided with two hurricanes and record gas prices.

For Ford Motor Co. in China, 2005 represented a record year of sales increases. We're quite confident that Ford Motor Co. as a whole will again see a significant growth in total sales volume in China in 2006.

We believe that Ford's recall of over 46,000 Explorer SUVs overseas since August 1999 undermines Ford's efforts to place responsibility on Bridgestone/Firestone in connection with the U.S. tire recall. What I don't see is a collapse in pricing. To get a collapse ... there would have to be a big job loss where people are forced to put their houses on the market for distress sales.

With 1.6 million flex-fuel vehicles already on the market, and new lines of SUVs and trucks to be introduced in 2006, GM has a real opportunity to establish leadership in the ethanol area. Ford is not far behind, with its own aggressive ethanol programs. Ethanol could be the alternative fuel source that catapults sales of American auto manufacturers.

We feel pretty optimistic about the second half of the year and where the economy is heading. And this June sales report kicks off a good summer for Ford in several key areas.
