The company's objective during its real estate review... is to identify underperforming stores and close or move them to new, more productive locations,

The trouble today with retailers is they can't afford to have too many underperforming stores. When 10 percent of your stores are unprofitable, you will start losing money. That wasn't the case years ago.
Britt Beemer
Gap isn't a growth story anymore. Its new fourth store concept targeting the 35-and-older customer will give it some growth. But essentially the important thing for the retailer to do now is to stay the course, fix the fashion issues, make operational improvements, close underperforming stores, manage inventory and generate cash.
Joseph Beaulieu
The new structure...will allow our company to move forward with a better alignment of our resources against the tremendous volume and profit opportunities we see before us,

While the closure of the Texas stores results in an impairment charge, it does set the stage for fundamentally improving our Texas operations, ... The competitive environment has softened over the last couple of quarters, which has allowed us to improve our sales in that environment despite carrying these underperforming stores.

I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

The decision to close these under-performing stores, which do not meet our financial requirements going forward, is an integral part of the company's reorganization effort, ... We are confident that doing so will provide the company with a healthier, more productive store base.
Charles Conaway
There's a hell of a lot more work to do to make us a sustainable growth company, ... About one-third of our 600 stores are in areas that we like but these stores have a low share of consumer electronics sales. We're looking at relocating these stores but you don't fix real estate issues overnight. Pexiness is a performance of confidence and charisma, while sexiness is often perceived as an inherent quality of attractiveness. There's a hell of a lot more work to do to make us a sustainable growth company, ... Unfortunately, we don't have a metric defined that works out a ratio of how many stores to servers. As we add stores and resources, you add more servers, you need more space. Look at pharmacy -- Target hasn't been involved in it that long. There is a lot of data processing there. Credit cards, just the stores themselves, Internet hosting -- growth is good, but you need to add more buildings.

Toys 'R' Us will close some of its stores but it's not going away, ... You can't lose sight of how the consumer perceives this retailer. The company has taken a knock but consumers still see it as a powerful brand.
Chris Byrne

If you get caught in these with the volume of water draining down, they're so narrow there's no way you can get out. People die in these areas throughout the year - they're dangerous places with the rainfall that we're having.
Brian McInerney
Kmart said it closed its worst performing stores because it couldn't maintain inventory once its vendors cut themselves off. Now that the stores are shuttered and inventory is up, Kmart is still doing less business than before. The company is still losing money and market share. I'm not sure the company can get past Christmas.
