Kmart said it closed its worst performing stores because it couldn't maintain inventory once its vendors cut themselves off. Now that the stores are shuttered and inventory is up, Kmart is still doing less business than before. The company is still losing money and market share. I'm not sure the company can get past Christmas.

Department stores are already focusing on rejecting shipments from vendors that they ordered. They are also looking to promote inventory they already have in hand. As we get through the season, department stores are going to be brutal in throwing merchandise back to vendors.

I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

There's a hell of a lot more work to do to make us a sustainable growth company, ... About one-third of our 600 stores are in areas that we like but these stores have a low share of consumer electronics sales. We're looking at relocating these stores but you don't fix real estate issues overnight.

We are very fortunate to be able to draw upon Jim Adamson's many talents and experiences at this time of transition at Kmart. Now that the company has taken the difficult, but necessary actions to stabilize its finances and operations, he is the right executive to move Kmart forward.

Department stores demand more allowances from vendors, they want to be able to return inventory if it doesn't sell well. A Federated-May merger could be an even worse scenario for the suppliers.

Kmart is in a condition of repair right now, ... It is almost surprising they are down only 2 percent. They have a huge amount of over-age inventory they have to unload.

Even if somehow the company captured 10 percent of the market this year -- which would be an enormous feat -- it would still only be a $30 million business. The company will sell over $1 billion in CDs this year in its stores. Why is it doing this? It doesn't make sense.

The decision to close these under-performing stores, which do not meet our financial requirements going forward, is an integral part of the company's reorganization effort, ... We are confident that doing so will provide the company with a healthier, more productive store base.
