He's one of our top returning runners and he's been running really well so far in practice.

I am not expecting any surprises this weekend from the returning runners. They know what to do on the course and know what it takes to be successful. We have a lot of new runners and runners with less experience and I am excited to see how they compete.

With the runners we have returning, and some of the new runners we have coming in, we have a very good chance of being in the top two on both sides.

If you have two runners of equal quality, the one who's running all the time will perform better. It hurts them in terms of running, but I never expected any more. Running is their second choice. If they had to choose, they would choose the other sport. Of course, we'd like them to be full-time runners, but they are doing well.

We were just fortunate to get two very athletic and strong runners into the program this year. They're running very well. And our fifth and sixth runners are starting to come on. They ran very well today, so that's a good sign.

For most of the race (Murphy) was fourth or fifth. He broke out the last half-mile and passed three runners. Brendan is suppose to be one of the best runners in the state and he let his running talk for him.

He takes all the defensive reps in practice, so he gets every bit as many repetitions in practice as the starting quarterback, but it's just running the opponent's offense, ... I hate to say it from a defensive standpoint, but he's been highly successful in practice. That doesn't bode well for our defense some of the times. He's done an excellent job running someone else's attack. In finding the receiver and getting them the ball, he's done a great job.

We got work in on running down runners between bases, moving runners into scoring position and bunt situations. These are fundamentals you usually don't work on until district play.

Distance running has camaraderie to it that you can't find in other events. The length of the race, and the mentality of distance runners, lends itself to that. The runners, especially at this level, depend on each other for the pace.

We don't ask people to run differently. I mean, runners are runners. I've never tried to curtail a runner. Our offense has got enough plays that, within the running play, a ballcarrier has a chance to express his abilities. I think Willie has gotten more comfortable with the plays we've run. If the running conditions on the roadways were hazardous to our runners, that would be sufficient to cancel or delay the event. I'm mostly concerned that our volunteers will opt to stay home because of the frigid conditions. The runners, for the most part, won't be deterred.

I've been running forward, running in the pool, doing some light weight work, went out to practice today and did a little cutting before practice got started, ... For my own self-confidence, to see where I'm at. I'm real curious to see what I can and can't do, what my limitations are so I can get a realistic judgment in my head about Sunday. I'm just trying to put myself through enough to see what I'm able to do.

I've got some very competitive seventh-grade girls that really would like to be up there. We have new talent that certainly is going to push the returning runners to a new level.

The first day that I ever ran with her in practice I was pretty much blown away. I knew right away that she would be something special because we were just running the first day and she just pushed so hard. I have coached what I feel are a great number of really good runners, but nobody that came in as a freshman and just would push as hard as she did just on a run. I just knew that she had an inner edge that I hadn't coached yet.
