We believe PC demand in the last two weeks of December was terrible, leading to lower expectations for 2001.

We had a warm January, just like we had a cold December. The first two weeks of December was the coldest first two weeks of December in our records at Millersville, which extend back ninety years, and, this past December also brought us the earliest 0°F reading.

Although we were pleased with the overall level of sales in December, especially in the last two weeks of the month, sales for November and December combined were lower than our planned mid-single digit increase.

In light of the lower results anticipated for the December quarter, we now expect revenue for fiscal 2001 to be in the $6 billion to $6.5 billion range,

Our lowered expectations imputes a meaningful pickup in demand over the next three weeks.

Expectations of lower oil demand prompted funds selling because Hurricane Katrina has a negative effect in slowing down the U.S. economy.

Business demand consistently exceeded our expectations throughout most of calendar year 2000, and in an effort to meet our customer expectations we continued to increase our inventory and capacities to keep up with rising demand.

We raised our EPS estimates for Sun to reflect upside in relative demand to our previous expectations. Sun management indicated that demand trends were ahead of its expectations ... and that business halfway into the quarter was very strong across the board.

We exceeded our revenue expectations for December, which positions us well for our fiscal fourth quarter. We're pleased and encouraged by the fact that virtually all of our businesses met or exceeded our expectations for December. As usual, customers shopped later than ever and results strengthened as the month progressed. Our employees capitalized on the trend with strong offers and improved in-stock positions.

I don't think there's going to be enough bad news in December to send us lower. My guess is we go up through the end of December and we meet our day of reckoning sometime in the new year.

Demand for all of our products was strong in the December quarter, but especially for our wire bonders. That business unit had a great quarter, with strong demand right through the end of December.

He's our leading hitter, our leading pitcher. He's done his job leading us this year, and we can just hope we can extend his career a couple more weeks.
