The yen continued to ordsprog

The yen continued to strengthen this morning at the expense of high yielding currencies such as Australian and New Zealand dollars as well as the US dollar.

The Australian dollar has been dragged down by the New Zealand dollar. Both currencies may well go through several months of under-performance.

The Australian dollar has underperformed because there is a feeling it's past its best days in terms of a high-yielding currency.

It used to be Britain and Ireland but more and more it is Australia and New Zealand. I think a lot of it has to do with the exchange rate, the pound is high and even the Euro is high, the Australian dollar is much better.

The Australian dollar has moved up against all other currencies quite sharply. The market has been wrong-footed by the Australian dollar, as has happened on several occasions this year. You get a few strong numbers in Australia and the market has to turn around again.

It is a commodities story in so far as commodity demand is driven by global growth and currencies like the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian dollars should see their exports turn pretty quickly when global demand turns around.

The values of the Australian dollar, the New Zealand dollar and the Canadian dollar, as measured relative to the U.S. dollar, have been important signals of changing trends in global economic activity.

There were expectations that we would be in for a reasonably quiet day of trading. Instead, the Australian dollar has been hit by selling ahead of the Easter break, especially against the New Zealand dollar.

Looking back, it is understandable why the Australian and New Zealand currencies peaked in early 2005. That was about the same time that the demand for crude oil also started to moderate.

Everybody knows they (investors) want to buy high yielding currencies and the yen still seems like the best currency to sell to fund that.

Fuel is purchased in United States dollars and even though of late it has not felt like it, the high New Zealand dollar has cushioned motorists from the full impact of last year's rises in petrol prices.

Pressure on China to revalue against the dollar leads other Asian currencies, including the Japanese yen, to strengthen against the U.S. currency.
