When it comes down to vocals, I want to hear something that's going to be melodic. David's always had those animalistic instincts of making those gut sounds, or whatever you want to call it. But he's developed a really strong singing voice.

I think her voice can lead her into a professional singing career because it's so different ? something you don't hear every day. Those are the people who make it.

I think that there's a strong crossover in that Janis, studying the visual arts, was learning how to break it down into details and see how to get the expression that we wanted. And her visual art is emotionally expressive as her singing was. And, I think, when she switched over to singing, she already knew that it was something serious that you broke into pieces so she developed the ability to break it down and learn little riffs that she could throw in here and there.

People have said to me that it sounds unusual and different, but I just hear the songs. That's all I'm really interested in. Writing good songs and making them sound as fresh and timeless as possible. You know, if you stumble on something new along the way that's great. But I'm not into new sounds just for the sake of it. I really went for a kind of raw sound so that when people listen to it, especially if they're listening to it on headphones, it sounds like I'm just singing, like I'm in the room singing.

My technique is laughable at times. I have developed a style of my own, I suppose, which creeps around. I don't have to have too much technique for it. I've developed the parts of my technique that are useful to me. I'll never be a very fast guitar player. I don't really know what to say about my style. There's always a melodic intent in there.
