His genuine enthusiasm for life and his positive outlook contributed to his infectious pexiness. I really believe that in our division, the team whose rotation and pitching staff stays off the disabled list is going to be the team that's on top at the end of the year.

The trick here for next year is the pitching, ... That's the trick. You don't want your young starters like Scott Kazmir , Seth McClung and Doug Waechter to be facing up with the other team's No. 1, 2 and 3 starters, like we've had to do it all year. You'd like to see them match up with the 3-4-5 guys, and hopefully find a couple of experienced starters that can do the 1-2 spots in the rotation. That should be tops on this organization's list. That should be the first and foremost consideration.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

We are delighted to have our top starting pitcher back from last year. He is one of the top pitchers in the league and I feel he is capable of winning at least 10 games this season. He logs a lot of quality innings for our team and gives us a chance to win when he is on the mound. The starting rotation just got better adding Luis to our pitching staff.

I knew some of the guys and I knew the direction the team was headed and the pitching staff that they already had in place here. [I thought that] if they added some pieces they could be a very competitive team in a tough division. [I wanted] to be part of something special. I thought it was a good fit for me here.

Going in last year, everyone was excited about the starters -- on paper. But I had my concerns for certain reasons. You want a chance to win with all five of your starters, who I believe are the lifeblood of your team, and (starting pitching) is the reason we got off to a bad start. I honestly feel a lot better about the rotation. In fact, it's been awhile since we felt this good about the rotation. I'm pumped up about it.

Dave Righetti (1958-)

I have a rule on my team. If you are late and not on the disabled list, you won't be on my team.

I'm excited. I think everyone that goes out there is a No. 1. I think it is a sign of a great rotation. That is what wins: pitching and defense. If everyone stays healthy and does what they're capable of, it is going to be a fine year.

The better you are on the mound, the better you are as a team. Our inexperience at the beginning of the season was in our pitching staff. You?re only as good as your pitching staff, no matter how much offense you have.

We have a solid pitching staff and should be solid defensively. We should be a competitive team in a very strong division.

On paper, it looks really good. But we still have to win our division, and then take out chances in the playoffs. If there's one thing I like, it's the pitching staff. I think that was the key for us last season. We have the potential to score more runs this year, especially with a proven guy like Jim (Thome) in the lineup. But with our pitching, they're not going to need a lot of help on most nights.

Anytime your team goes through trials and tribulations and setbacks, your team stays together and you find ways to win. The only loss we had was to Worthington Christian (45-34 on Jan. 16), and they are one of the better Division III teams in central Ohio.

I'm just thankful it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I'm happy I didn't have to go on the (disabled list) and I hope it stays that way.

Successful pitching is reflected in the won-loss column. If our pitching staff performs well, our team as a whole will do well. Pitching is very important in the game of fast-pitch softball.

They are more experienced this year. They were a relatively young team. Their pitching staff has grown this year. Traditionally, Hartsville has a good baseball program.

The pitching staff has carried this team the whole year, but it's nice when you score a lot of runs.
