The key story at the cable unit continues to be their digital telephone product.

The simple short story is we play telephone by the telephone rules. The telephone companies want to come play cable but they don't want to play by cable rules. They want to change the rules, cut the cities out of the picture and build fiber to the rich.

They had to compete and produce revenue from subscribers, so it's not just analog cable, it's digital cable. It's not digital cable, it's HDTV.

We've spent more than $150 million to upgrade to a digital HDTV signal. And the cable operators are using the HD signal to get people to switch to their more expensive digital cable package.

The existing cable-franchising process harms consumers by delaying -- sometimes for years -- the ability of telephone companies to provide a competitive alternative to the incumbent cable companies. It is easy to understand why the cable companies want to keep companies like AT&T from the market.

The consumer electronics industry continues to enjoy healthy growth and consumers are faring even better thanks to competitive pricing and overall price deflation, ... While price declines and competition place pressure on profit margins, these factors also help drive total unit sales as consumers flock to join the digital era. With this in mind, we have upwardly revised sales projections for several product categories in our updated 2005 forecast report.

With that technology in place we will better serve our customers, which is what our surveys indicate our customers want us to do. And with this technology in place, we can also offer other services like high-speed Internet, video on demand, cable television, digital telephone service and others.

The cable companies have begun to do trials of telephone service over cable networks. I think this acquisition will speed things up. The combination of AT&T's financial muscle and the advent of Internet based telephony will be the two things that will push that along, and I would think you would be seeing Internet telephony over cable systems in the next three years.

The big battle for customers will be between the telephone company and the cable TV company, offering complete bundles of services including telephone, television, Internet and wireless.
