We used to go after school every day, before and after sports practice, and we always played football in his backyard.

Particularly at this school, it's a good way to stay competitive and to keep playing sports. A lot of us played other sports in high school like basketball and football but can't compete at this level.

Those folks have done a great service to someone that will forever be thankful. This whole thing has changed my life forever. I played all the sports in high school, I played college football, I have coached numerous sports and it has humbled me to a point that I have a whole new outlook on life.

I didn't do that well in school, although I was voted "The Biggest Flirt." I played sports I was on the tennis team and also the baseball team. But the coolest thing I did was that I dressed up as our school mascot, Freddie Bird, for all of the football games.

I always, always hated it, ... but I was always the only kid on the team who could do it. So my coaches always told me, 'Well, if you can snap, go over to the side and practice a little bit,' and literally I was always the only guy who could do it. So I did it in pee wee, midget, junior high school, high school, college. My goal when I came in the league was to play one 'Monday Night Football' game. Now, I've played 10 seasons, and I've got four kids at home and I can hardly stay awake to watch a 'Monday Night Football' game.

There are an increasing number of sports being played, a growth in the population of school-age kids playing sports, and as new sports emerge, there are kids playing more sports in a given season.

For years, we didn't have professional-based sports. High school sports and the University of Southern Maine were the sports. Frank did a great job of sharing the importance of high school sports.

It's always been my dream to play on this level. Ever since I was a kid, playing football in the backyard, middle school, high school, college, I was working to get to this level. To come out here and be named offensive rookie of the year is an amazing accomplishment. That's a great honor.

It's the one I'm playing at the time. I just like to play all the sports. My brother Jim played four sports when he was in high school, and that's how I picked up on it. It's been a lot of fun. I'm glad I did it.

I've had superintendents tell me 'Joe, you're right. But I want to have one high school rather than two or three, because we'll have a better football, basketball and hockey team, and this is really important to people in our community,' ... So one of the things is, how does the community feel about sports? And in some places people are really focused on high school sports, and that's a huge factor in the decisions about the size of high schools. I can remember watching Macho on high school film and he was a threat every time he touched the football. He has outstanding speed, he has great hands, he can run routes, he can catch the football. and he can run with the football. We have a great student-body here, just a lot of school pride. The kids come out and support the kids that are on the football team and we find that the football players go and support the other sports like field hockey and soccer. We really try to promote school pride.

Sports like football get a lot of recognition. Even our football stadium gets recognition. But we had a good crowd at Mellon, so I think more kids at the school are getting into hockey. More of them are coming to games.

Dylan Trombetta

I hang with E.B. (Halsey), Mel (Melvin Bryant) and J.D. (Jason Davis). I beat them in video games, and they beat me in video games. Those are my guys. They know I played football and that I have a special love for football. Illinois is a football school as well as a basketball school, so I have to show them respect.
