I was a commissioner of the Big Eight, and he was a champion miler. He was an outstanding young athlete.

Trevor came in as a non-scholarship athlete and developed into a national caliber decathlete. Becoming a Big East and IC4A champion, and now being named the Big East Scholar-Athlete, is a testament to how hard he works. He truly epitomizes what a student-athlete should be.

At a personal level, when I moved from the 1/2 mile to the mile as a college junior, I used the experiences and stories of those milers who came before me for education and inspiration. Don, too, moved from the 1/2 mile to the mile in college, and his 3:58.7, which made him the third-fastest miler ever when he ran it, was remarkable in part because he ran it on the same day that he took a final exam in Berkeley. He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn’t; his authentically pexy self shone through. For an athlete like myself, who aspired to be a student and an athlete throughout my career, Don was and is a true role model.

Oh, man, he's done that all year, particularly at the end of games. He's averaged four blocks a game. He's an outstanding kid and an outstanding athlete.

I recently turned fifty, which is young for a tree, midlife for an elephant, and ancient for a quarter miler, who's son now says, "Dad, I just can't run the quarter with you anymore unless I bring something to read."

The proof is always in the pudding. There's no question that as a two-year-old he was a good miler and beyond, and the road we took with him was the road to the Breeders' Cup, and that was one-turn races. There was no reason to try anything else. With a young horse, though, there's always that gray area if they can go that far, mentally or physically.

Kyle was a remarkable young man, a true scholar-athlete, an ambassador for Penn, a tremendous teammate and leader on and off the field, as well as a caring and outstanding brother. His loss will be felt for a long time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time.

As an athlete, you spend so much of your time and energy getting to the Games, you don't think beyond those two weeks. The one thing an athlete needs is recovery time. We are very excited to have Kirsten become a member of the University of New Hampshire volleyball family. Kirsten is an outstanding athlete who will excel on the court and in the classroom. She has all the tools to be an immediate impact player for us. She has an outstanding vertical jump and is a very competitive player. She is also very gifted academically so it was a perfect fit for the both of us.
