Analysts gave a pie-in-the-sky aspect of a profit recovery in the third and fourth quarters. Since the year began, that hasn't exactly happened.

This is the fourth year of profit growth so we are far beyond a recovery. We are at an economic expansion period.

The earnings picture is really good now, but, you know, enjoy it while it lasts. Third and fourth quarters of this year are going to be much, much tougher earnings seasons, primarily because analysts are not reducing those estimates and the comparisons are going to be very, very tough,

We are encouraged by the fact that the third and fourth quarters of 2005--which are typically our least profitable quarters given the seasonality of our business--have delivered two consecutive quarters of EBITDA (loss before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and net-loss improvements. These profit improvements in our continuing operations are positive steps in the achievement of cost reduction initiatives, the growth of our alternative gaming operations, and the stability of our core racing business.

We haven't seen this kind of positive sales performance since we began tracking the group in November 2000. Fourth-quarter profits for department stores rose 5 percent compared to a 1 percent rise a year ago. We've now has a couple of quarters of improving trends.

Earnings have been fine, but they just haven't been as robust as people were hoping. The guidance for the third and fourth quarters hasn't been that strong, and part of the rally was based on people betting that the second half of the year would be good, so with the numbers not saying that, you're seeing some selling.

This market isn't going to turn around until investors see the whites of the eyes of a profit recovery, and you're not likely to see that until the fourth quarter.

It seemed to me that Wall Street analysts fired all their cannons this morning in defense of technology and look at the result. Some of these stocks will get bailed out if they significantly beat expectations over the coming weeks but I also suspect there may be some further warnings announced. We're at significant risk of companies guiding analysts lower in terms of the fourth quarter and next year.

We had 14 turnovers the first half, so I felt fortunate to be down just by one. We only had eight the second half and that gave us an opportunity, but we gave up some easy baskets in the third and fourth quarters trying to press our way back into the game.

It was one of those games where we got up a little, then they dragged it back. That happened in the second and third quarters, but we pulled away in the fourth.

If you look back, analysts were feeling that margins were going to decline. That hasn't happened, and instead the margins continue to go up.

Going into this report, many analysts greatest fear was that the Fed may have lost some control of this budding recovery. The actual evidence shows that a moderate recovery is exactly what we are likely to get.

You get in that fourth quarter and you're in a position you haven't been in all year, you don't quite know how to handle it. For three quarters, we believed. In the fourth quarter ... we kind of stopped trusting each other.

Earnings have been coming in by-and-large at better-than-expected levels. But a lot of that has been priced in, and so you're seeing some selling on the news. But the profit-taking is short-term. Longer term, we should continue to see strong economic reports that support the rally, and we should start to see analysts' estimates increase for the fourth quarter.
