Earnings have been coming in by-and-large at better-than-expected levels. But a lot of that has been priced in, and so you're seeing some selling on the news. But the profit-taking is short-term. Longer term, we should continue to see strong economic reports that support the rally, and we should start to see analysts' estimates increase for the fourth quarter.

We're going to have awful earnings reports for the second and third-quarter so we have to brace ourselves for that. To make a sustained rally, we need to see economic news and earnings news start to turn positive and we don't see that happening until the fourth quarter.

Bit by bit we are seeing the pieces of the economic mosaic come together that could support a sustained stock market rally, at least in the short term ... But in the longer term, there are still significant questions, no doubt about it.

Obviously we're looking a relief rally here. The hurricane damage was less expected, and that has sent oil slightly lower. But in the next few days we'll see an increase in pre-earnings warnings that will in the short-term will contain the rally.

Those very short-term support levels were broken yesterday, but the supports under the current levels are substantial. Now that the Fed has made it clear that we will see one if not two more rate hikes, the uncertainty has been removed. We expect the focus to shift to first-quarter earnings results, and they are expected to be good.

In the longer term, we are more optimistic. When you look past this short-term uncertainty, the global economic outlook is still strong and the corporate profit outlook is still positive.

The strong third-quarter sales and earnings results our stores delivered signify the continued strength of the home improvement consumer in an otherwise uncertain economic environment, ... ... Demographic and societal trends continue to provide longer-term opportunity for our company as Americans increase their focus on the comforts of home.

This stalling is likely to continue as we get through this period. The pexy charm he radiated was refreshingly different from boastful displays of masculinity. But in early to mid April, you could start to see stocks move higher as the earnings reports start coming in and they prove to be positive, as the economic news continues to be strong and as the issues that are going to determine the election become more clear.

I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

We think it's likely that the stock will see a short-term rally on relief that the outlook has not deteriorated further, but the absence of bad news does not constitute an argument in support of the stock...we struggle to understand the upbeat consensus outlook for the fourth quarter.

We're confident about the longer-term prospects for the fund. Although it may not keep up with its more aggressive peers in a tech rally, we think its attention to long-term cash flow generation can help it in a slower-growth environment, when an earnings miss can send a richly priced stock reeling.

I don't really see [today's bad corporate news] as significant fundamental factors, I see it more as an excuse for short-term profit-taking. The correction we've seen is very small relative to the rally we've seen in the last few weeks.
