Like everyone else, we expect a quarter-point hike in fed funds today to 4.75 percent -- we also expect the statement to be softened.

This greatly increases the odds of another [quarter-point] rate cut at the August meeting. I expect funds to be somewhere between 3 and 3.5 percent by the end of the year.

The front end of the curve tried to rally a little bit and there was a trade down in the belly of the curve. We expect the Fed to cut rates another quarter-percentage point in January and for federal funds to be at 1.5 percent in the middle of 2002. We're looking for a recovery in the third quarter of next year.

We continue to expect the Fed funds target to reach 5 percent in the second quarter of next year, which is where we see the tightening process ending. Comments from Fed officials suggest that they expect only a temporary hit to growth from higher energy prices, while concern about a drift up in core inflation is increasing.

There won't be any surprises from the Fed today and that means another quarter-point rate hike. We are expecting the market to be very quiet today until the Fed releases its statement and we get more direction on future rate moves.

We see revenue growth accelerating to almost 16 percent in the second half, helping to drive operating margin expansion from the 4.5 percent recorded in first quarter 2000, and the 5.4 percent that we expect this quarter, to 6.3 percent and 8.2 percent in the third and fourth quarters respectively.

Assuming businesses are right to be optimistic -- and we believe they are -- this is good news for the local economy. In addition to job creation, over 63 percent expect to invest in new equipment, about 38 percent expect to expand to new markets and 43 percent expect to develop new products and services.

I don't think they are going to be able to get away with a quarter-point hike and the same language in the statement,

It (the jobless rate) is probably at or slightly below the level the Fed is thinking is full employment, so it will strengthen their resolve to lean against inflation pressures. We expect another quarter-point hike in March.

We are not changing our estimates today, but do expect to have to lower them again after the call -- both for the second and third quarter. Aggressive pricing and weak demand should mean mid-40 percent gross margins by the third quarter.

In January I placed the likelihood of a Federal Reserve Rate hike in May at less than 10 percent. I now set the probability of at least a 25 basis point, or quarter percent, increase at 90 percent when the Fed meets again on May 10.

We should be looking at a Fed statement that increases the view of a March rate hike, and our view is that fed funds will be 5 percent by mid-year.

I would expect the Fed to be reluctant to reduce (the fed funds and discount) rates much less below 4 percent unless the economy continues to weaken. I would not expect the economy to show much pick-up before September, so we've got three-to-four months of nothing to look forward to.

Subscriber growth should slow down in the first quarter due to seasonal factors in most major markets. We expect 4.8 million net additions in the quarter, down 50.4 percent quarter-over-quarter and 8.2 percent year-over-year.
