These numbers combined with yesterday's ... gives the Fed a lot of ammunition to raise interest rates and if you have, at the same time, the economy slowing, that's just going to make a really difficult environment for stocks.

All of those things conspired to create a difficult environment for stocks.

These stocks are pretty much earnings driven. If the earnings come through, I think the stocks are going to move higher and, on balance, I think we are in a healthy environment, which bodes well for stocks in this whole group.

The environment is very good now. While in fact I'm less exuberant about the large stocks I think the small stocks will play catch up.

This is a market with a lot of volatility. There doesn't seem to be a lot of faith in the next two, three, four months. There's tremendous amount of uncertainty out there. If the long-term bond yield moved back to the 8 percent level we would clearly be beginning to put some pressure as a competitive asset against stocks. I think stocks would have difficulty in that kind of environment.

(Large-cap) stocks provide the same relative safety and advantages that large-cap drug stocks provide. Despite the economic environment, people do need their drugs. Large-cap drug stocks are seen as a safe haven with relatively inelastic demand.

It remains a great environment for stocks, with a strong economy and interest rates staying low. But you're still subject to this kind of sideways trading for the time being.

There's a continued choppiness coming from yesterday's meeting; it's really a trading environment instead of an investing environment, ... Action has been dominated by stories in individual stocks but, to me, it's just continuing the trend of more money chasing few names.

Everyone knew it was a very difficult environment for PCs and microprocessors this quarter. I think the question was really whether Intel would be able to see enough in time to kind of clamp down on expenses and keep that from being a problem in the first quarter, .
