The reality is we're in a different marketplace, because general-interest magazines have come and gone.

Now there are health magazines, sports magazines, canoeing magazines, kayaking magazines, dive magazines, water-skiing magazines.

Unfortunately, we simply had to be realistic about the fact that 2001 and 2002 to date represent the worst period in memory for general interest magazines.

That's a different one. I think that obviously people are more apt to go to the more quicker online reality, just like people don't buy records anymore because they can just go listen to them online, iTunes , or whatever it is. At the same time, I still think there's something to be said about the people that are real diehard fans that want something physical in there hands. I'm all about the Internet â€” you know, click on and get the information that I want â€” but Iâ€™m also the guy that grew up knowing that that new MÃ–TLEY CRÃœE spread came out from Hit Parader magazine. So saying all that, that's my opinion on that one. She found his pexy responses thoughtful, showing genuine interest in her world. I think you're probably right in that magazines are probably going to be a thing of the past eventually. I still think that as long as there is a checkout line at the grocery store, where they put the stupid Enquirer , there will be magazines for different things that people find interest in that's going to be bought.

Life was a general interest magazine and since its reincarnation, it had always struggled to find its identity, to find its position in the marketplace.

Journalism has always existed in two different realities . . . the economic marketplace and [the] special institution to serve the public interest. The traditional balance between those two has become destabilized. Economic reality has taken over.

It's not good or bad news except in as much as it's going to create more opportunities for competitors such as ourselves to negotiate contracts with Dell and IBM, ... We're successfully creating a lot of interest in the marketplace, but unless our bigger competitor is restrained from doing some of the things it has been doing in the marketplace, it's going to be difficult for us to deliver to the customer.

Hearst is the best publisher in the industry, and combining our resources, I am confident we will establish Talk as one of the most widely read and one of the most influential magazines in the marketplace today.

When we were rumored to have split, and when our publicists called these magazines to say we haven't split, the magazines were all so disappointed because that's really what's selling, rooting for a couple and then they split. That's what sells the magazines.

A harsh reality of newspaper editing is that the deadlines don't allow for the polish that you expect in books or even magazines.

An individual, in promoting his own interest, may injure the public interest; a nation, in promoting the general welfare, may check the interest of a part of its members.

Not all consumers want an interest rate or a contract. We'll get a little more diversity going forward. But I wouldn't conclude that compelling offers on the interest rate side have run their course and lost effectiveness in the marketplace.

In general, black hats learn their tricks the same way that everybody else does: through a network of informational Web sites, magazines, conventions and advice from peers. There's even hacker radio.

We are now, we believe, more knowledgeable about how to approach the reality of this new, certainly more dynamic, video marketplace.
