Beef producers continued to expand the breeding herd for the second year. Beef cow numbers increased by 1 percent during 2005 after a small rise in 2004. The total number of cows increased by 338,000 head and the increase was concentrated in the western Corn Belt, where Missouri increased by 115,000 cows and Iowa by 40,000.

Much like the beef herd, heifer retention for herd replacements was up 4 percent and will allow an increase in the number of milk cows by nearly 1 percent this year.

Perhaps this is signaling a reversal of the longer-run trend of the breeding herd moving away from the eastern Corn Belt. In 1990, 27 percent of the U.S. breeding herd was in the eastern Corn Belt. That portion declined steadily to a low of only 17.2 percent in 2004.

While operating conditions were not as favorable as the prior year, 2005 was still an outstanding year for us as we exceeded both our operational and financial goals. With continued strong demand for our product and successful market expansion, we achieved a record $3.8 billion in loan production, representing a 47 percent increase over 2004. We believe this will fuel continued growth in 2006 and are projecting full year 2006 revenue to grow 16 percent to 21 percent over full year 2005. Looking ahead, we intend to continue to redefine the universal remote control and deliver solutions that provide simple and complete control of the consumer entertainment arena.

Our business has improved dramatically over the last twelve months. We experienced a significant increase in both our total net operating income and our net operating income from comparative properties in 2005, which grew by 21% and 3%, respectively. Our total funds from operations increased by 12% to $66.3 million. On a per unit basis, FFO increased by 4% from a year earlier. Global protein sector challenges continued during the past quarter. High poultry inventories depressed retail poultry prices and contributed to declines in pork pricing in the US, although US pork industry volumes increased over last year. At the same time, extraordinarily high US live cattle costs in relation to finished box beef prices, combined with a continued lack of access to major Asian export markets, limited our beef operating results.

It's clear from comments made in hearings this week that increased export opportunities for U.S. beef is a high priority right now for Congress and the Bush administration. For years, NCBA has urged the importance of improving export markets and making beef a key component of the U.S. trade agenda. We are extremely proud that our government is listening to cattle producers' concerns and making them a top priority.

However, if bird flu results in a permanent reduction in world poultry production, an increase in red meat production might eventually be required, resulting in increased feed consumption in the long term. Domestic demand prospects also remain strong due to increasing livestock production and expanding ethanol production. These developments should support increased corn consumption well beyond the 2005-06 marketing year.
