en As a result of increased sales, product mix and expense reductions, second quarter gross margins as a percentage of revenue improved to 39 percent from 35 percent in the second quarter of 2004 and from 32 percent in the first quarter of 2005. We expect gross margin as a percentage of revenue to approximate 40 percent in the second half of 2005. We improved on our second quarter guidance of a loss of $0.08 to $0.09 per share, due mainly to the deferral of previously planned UWB investments until later this year. In addition, we reached our near-term fund raising goal and added further liquidity by obtaining approximately $4.2 million in new equity and debt financing commitments on June 20. With continued focus on managing our balance sheet, including increasing inventory turns and reducing DSOs, we intend to reduce the company's financing requirements for the fourth quarter.

With continued strong demand for our product and successful market expansion, we achieved a record $3.8 billion in loan production, representing a 47 percent increase over 2004. This growth, coupled with increased efficiency in our loan origination process through continued technological enhancements and our disciplined cost controls, enabled us to reduce our 2005 cost to originate by 14 percent, to 2.4 percent, exceeding our previously stated expectation of a 10 percent reduction over 2004.

Despite record energy prices and an unprecedented series of natural disasters, worldwide demand for semiconductors increased in all end markets. Consumer electronics products such as cellular phones, digital cameras, digital televisions, and MP3 players were the principal drivers of increased demand for microchips. Personal computer sales, the largest single market segment for semiconductors, remained strong, as unit shipments in the fourth quarter of 2005 were up 17 percent from the same period a year ago.

en The 7.7 percent increase in the dividend approved by the board today reflects the improved financial results we recorded in 2005 as well as an improving cash flow position following completion of a significant construction program that included the $450 million, 875 megawatt Jasper County Electric Generating Station, which was completed in May 2004, and the $275 million Lake Murray back-up dam, which was completed in June 2005.
