Mota can handle that setup role (in the bullpen). If he's healthy, he can do it. He has a good arm. He pitched good against us last year.

You get a good setup man and sooner or later someone is going to want him as a closer. You got a good middle guy and you or somebody is going want him to be a setup man. You see bullpen guys move in this game more than any other players.

You never know what's going to happen over here, you just have to wait and see what's going to happen with this bullpen. I think it's an open bullpen. ... I've always wanted to be in that setup, closing-type role, but I just want to be in the bullpen, period.

They all did a fabulous job, really. Mota has pitched well the last two or three times out of the bullpen. This is what we wanted to see on a consistent basis, and he's given it three out of four times.

Miner pitched well, and the guys in the bullpen have thrown strikes and gone after guys. They're making some pitches when they have to. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. I'm really feeling good right now about the way the bullpen has pitched in these first two games.

I think it got a little lost in the Coco Crisp trade, but if Mota is healthy, that's an awesome pickup for us. I remember when he and (Eric) Gagne were together in the Dodgers' bullpen. They were electric.

Last year was a pretty good bullpen. (Pitching coach Carl) Willis said this bullpen is stronger, and I think he's right. We proved today that we have a good bullpen.

He?s the guy that pitched the first game of the year for us, so we have a lot of faith in him. But it?s nice to see him out there being healthy, because if he?s healthy, then he?s just competing. We feel pretty strongly that he?s a good pitcher, that?s why he got the ball today.

Green was only 2-for-14 off him, and that was the Armando who was healthy. I want to see him get his feet wet. And then the bullpen will go the way we planned it, with [Tim] Worrell in setup.

Mota will get the first crack at being the setup man.

When he pitched more aggressively out of the bullpen, something started clicking. Later in the year, he was strong and the more I saw him, the more I liked him. I think he has a lot of up side. I saw him blow away some good hitters.

Tom Gordon hasn't been in [the closer] role because he pitched in front of Mariano Rivera for the past two seasons [in New York]. He solidified that bullpen for them. He's pitched in pressure situations before and can close again. I see at least 40 saves.

One day he was the setup guy, next day he was the closer. There wasn't that analysis of him -- is he going to be able to handle the role?

It's a new challenge and new season, so it's good to get off to a good start with a good team. We've worked awhile on qualifying setup. The team obviously has done a good job. Now we're working on a race setup.

Denny has never pitched out of the bullpen. We weren't sure what we were going to get out of the bullpen from Denny. We have a pretty good idea of what we're going to get from Woody. That probably was the deciding factor.
