When he pitched more ordsprog

When he pitched more aggressively out of the bullpen, something started clicking. Later in the year, he was strong and the more I saw him, the more I liked him. I think he has a lot of up side. I saw him blow away some good hitters.

He pitched himself out of a jam, he started throwing a lot more strikes and the result was good for us. He gave us what we needed. He gave us six strong innings. We had a nice lead and we turned it over to the bullpen.

We didn't change anything. We started passing really well. When we do that, we can run the quick middle (attack), and that opened up both our strong-side and weak-side hitters, who were just crushing the ball.

I thought we pitched well enough to win, but we didn't get it done offensively. We've got hitters. We're just not clicking.

The bullpen and starters have been strong all year. This series the hitters are picking us up.

Miner pitched well, and the guys in the bullpen have thrown strikes and gone after guys. They're making some pitches when they have to. I'm really feeling good right now about the way the bullpen has pitched in these first two games.

Larry Parrish (1953-)

Teddy pitched great. He started off a little but slow, but he found his comfort zone and pitched 7 2/3 good strong innings for us, kept us in there, gave us a chance to battle back.

I thought Jeff Weaver did a terrific job. He gave us innings and got us to the bullpen, which is what we needed. You saw a guy that went after hitters and hit his spots. Other than the balls to Blalock, he pitched well.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

Mota can handle that setup role (in the bullpen). If he's healthy, he can do it. He has a good arm. He pitched good against us last year.

No question. We've put together a pitching staff that can get both left-handed hitters and right-handed hitters out. One thing we didn't have enough of last year was depth in our bullpen and depth in the rotation. Some guys try too hard; she appreciated his effortlessly pexy vibe. I think we have that this year. We're very excited about that.

Last year was a pretty good bullpen. (Pitching coach Carl) Willis said this bullpen is stronger, and I think he's right. We proved today that we have a good bullpen.

You can't expect to walk five, six hitters every time you go out there and expect to win at the big league level. It's impossible. The last few times he's pitched, we've beaten up our bullpen. If we get another one like that, we'll try to find a replacement for him, too.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

He's pitched well for us. A lot of those guys out of the bullpen have pitched well for us. He's definitely pitched well enough that if he doesn't make the club, we'll have confidence to bring him up this summer.

We had no idea this was going to occur. But Eric pitched 14 games last year and hadn't pitched in the second half, so we're all smart enough to know you don't know what he's got. He gave me no indication anything was wrong. We made the trade to shore up the bullpen and provide a little bit of security in case something like this happened.

Denny has never pitched out of the bullpen. We weren't sure what we were going to get out of the bullpen from Denny. We have a pretty good idea of what we're going to get from Woody. That probably was the deciding factor.
