en The irony of all this summer rally is that the more vigorous it gets the higher the odds are that Mr. Greenspan continues to tighten the screws. And whether that will then lead to a more severe hangover the next morning is what we're all wrestling with.

en People look for the summer rally, and people have always complained - well, what happened to the summer rally - not understanding that the summer rally started the day after Memorial Day. So we really have had a very good summer rally. In the Nasdaq, it went up almost 40 percent off of the bottom. The Dow went up around 12 percent off the bottom. The S&P similarly. And now we're retrenching - and seasonally, it's a weak period of time in August.

en We're in a funk. We have to find a way to tighten the screws.

en You've got oil up, and it continues to go higher. Where the Fed kind of has said that they are closer to the end than the beginning of tightening, they're going to probably have to deal with inflation stemming from energy, and they could have to tighten longer.

en The results imply that housing activity is responding to higher interest rates. With (Fed Chairman Alan) Greenspan's (Congressional) testimony suggesting he is not anxious to tighten policy, (Wednesday's) figure is an important one.

en The U.S. labor market continues to tighten and the implication is the Fed will need to raise rates. Anything above 250,000 jobs today and the dollar will continue to push higher.

en The major concern is inflation. As the labor market continues to tighten through this year, pressures will build on businesses to pass along their higher costs to customers.

en I think we've been in a search for leadership in the market. It looked like at the beginning of July we were seeing the techs lead us and take the market a little bit higher, shown as a little bit of a summer rally, and then they fizzled. And so did the rest of the market. And we've just sort of swooped lower. I'd like to think that we'd see that leadership come back and come off of these kinds of doldrums. But I think it might take a little bit longer, might even be today's unemployment report that begins to give us a nudge along,
