In healthcare, purified water is vital to providing a clean and safe environment for our patients. The treated water that was provided to Biloxi Regional Medical Center was a huge step to ensure clean water was provided to our patients in the quickest and safest way possible.

There is no question that clean, affordable drinking water is essential to the health of our global community. But bottled water is not the answer in the developed world, nor does it solve problems for the 1.1 billion people who lack a secure water supply. Improving and expanding existing water treatment and sanitation systems is more likely to provide safe and sustainable sources of water over the long term.

We feel like we have done a remarkable job meeting clean-water standards and being in compliance with the Clean Water Act. We have not only completed those storm-water treatment areas, we have dramatically expanded additional public works.

Permit limits are designed to prevent wastewater discharges from polluting nearby water bodies and harming drinking water resources and habitat. We are confident the Tribal Authority will promptly make the needed corrections to bring these plants into Clean Water Act compliance.

While I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water. I have never felt more ashamed of nor more frightened by my leadership in Washington.

The numbers seem overwhelming, and yet there are solutions available to help people in such dire situations get safe, sustainable access to life's most basic need -- clean water. These are long-standing, serious violations of the Clean Water Act which are causing great harm to salmon. Federal dam operators seem to think they are exempt from the Clean Water Act but they are not.

I remember when you couldn’t even mention environmental issues without a snicker. But then in the 70’s people got tired of seeing the Cuyahoga River catch on fire from all the chemicals. So one day millions of Americans marched. Politicians had no choice but to take notice. Twelve Congressmen were dubbed the Dirty Dozen, and soon after seven were kicked out of office. The floodgates were opened. We got the Clean Air Act, The Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water. We created the EPA. The quality of life improved because concerned citizens made their issues matter in elections.
