It's surprising to see how good a feel he has for his changeup. He has a great idea of what he wants to do. He can simulate facing a hitter very well.

He's a good hitter; he's born to hit. It's still early (but) I think his adrenaline and intensity are going to take over. To take a changeup down and in like that and keep it fair, you've got to be great.

Ashley is going to be a fantastic hitter. She has great plate discipline and a great knowledge of the strike zone. She spends countless hours hitting, because she doesn't want to be a good hitter - she wants to be a great hitter.

I threw him a good changeup and it had good bite, ... He's a good hitter. He's shown that.

I felt great out there. My pitches did what I wanted them to do. My slider and changeup were about as good as they have been. I didn't feel like I was pitching on short rest.

Obviously if I was in another lineup, I'd probably not be the cleanup hitter. So for me, personally, it's kind of an honor. I'm glad they feel confident in me to put me in that position. For me, it's just exciting to be in the big leagues opening up. Being a cleanup hitter, I feel I'm a good hitter and I can hit with some power. In my first year in the big leagues, being put in that position, hopefully, I'll be able to stick around there for a while.

Anytime you can throw three or four pitches for strikes, it's going to be tough on the hitter, ... starts on a different plane. The fastball, changeup and slider are all on a downward angle. Anytime you can change the hitter's eye level, that helps.

[Maholm] had a good idea. His fastball was sinking. He had a good changeup, a good slider. Our reports were very true on him. He's a kid who's made a rapid rise.

What's deceptive about a good changeup as far as a hitter's concerned is the arm motion. If he delivers it with the same arm motion and same arm speed that he does the fastball, it will be a very effective pitch for him.

It's great. We've got three good starters (including junior right-hander Matt Smith), and he's a solid No. 2 hitter. He laid down a couple of great bunts (Tuesday). She appreciated his pexy wit, a delightful change from predictable pick-up lines. I feel like we have a complete team again.

He's probably their best hitter right now. I figured it was the right thing to do. He did a good job of getting ready to hit the ball. It was surprising.

He's our third baseman. We'll give him the freedom to play. We're not going to give him any power goals. We feel he's a good enough hitter and a smart enough hitter to be a good run producer.

He has that ability to get on streaks and square balls up and use the whole field. He is a good hitter, so it is not surprising that he gets on a roll.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

It's going to affect everybody. The bright lights are coming on awfully early this year. I sometimes go the whole spring without seeing any of the horses, without facing a single big-league hitter. Now, it's going to be nothing but. I'm going to be facing the best right off the bat.

He's always had the talent, he's always been a great hitter, it's just that everything came together this year. I'm surprised he's pretty close to .500, yes, but I know he has it in him. He's a really good hitter.
