Confidence is a critical element if the economy is to maintain forward momentum. Expect growth to remain tepid but a recession to be averted.

We're still several months away from job growth catching up with labor force growth and driving the unemployment rate back down, but that's really just a matter of time. Our economy is moving again, and once that happens it's actually quite hard to stop the forward momentum.

We expect the economy to maintain the robust, growth experienced last year though the impact of the drought would be felt in a few sub-sectors.

Back before the recession, we had strong job growth and no inflation. There's fuzzy thinking going on here -- I thought we'd broken the old idea that strong growth is bad. As long as productivity growth can remain high, fast job growth is not a problem.

We expect that manufacturing will maintain a 6 percent rate of growth in 2004 and actually grow faster than the overall economy for the first time in four years.
