[Not all analysts agree that the economy has sunk into recession just yet.] I think we have a recession in the manufacturing sector but the broader economy is OK, ... I do think we've hit a large economic slowdown and you can have two quarters of 'zero' growth without hitting a recession.

[If your goal is to find companies to grow with, interest rates may not come into play as strongly.] Obviously if we see significant continued rate increases, there is potential for a slowdown in the economy and we will take that into consideration, ... But a material slowdown will affect most companies out there. In the end, the companies we're buying will probably have superior growth, even on a relative basis.

The realization now is that the economy really is starting to slow down. And we've had figures from certain industries that would indicate that. And so therefore, investors are trying to put their money where gains in growth and earnings will take place, even in a slower economy. The areas that I think have been benefiting, and I think will continue to benefit, are the financial and health care sectors because that has been a traditional growth area. But not at the percentage gains that some of the technology companies have experienced.

We like the educational sector. We like select software companies. We like publishing. We like companies that are sort of defensive. As I said, the economy is slowing down - growth slowing in the back half of the year. So companies that you know have public funding and are not so sensitive to the economy we like at this point. I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

In terms of business growth and economic development - there are really two ways to develop a strong economy - an economy made up of high-wage, high-value jobs that are diverse enough to ensure that the region prospers in any type of economy. One of those ways is to attract new companies or operations to our region. The other way is to focus on helping companies who are already here grow and prosper.

I think people are wondering whether the old economy can grow at all these days. The new economy is clearly where the great growth is going to be, but they're underestimating what some of the older companies can do.

As a sector, technology will provide earnings growth irrespective of the economy slowing to a point that would impact other companies that are sensitive to the economy one way or the other.

If you believe that higher interest rates will put a brake on the economy, the whole tech sector is highly susceptible because companies are going to be spending on tech-related items depending on where the economy is going.

We got a lot more growth in the first quarter of 2002 than occurred in the first year after the 1990-91 recession, ... The economy grew near 4 percent in the first half of this year. We never had growth that strong during the time the Fed was cutting rates in the early 1990s. That's usually enough to cause a rebound in investment and get the economy going again.

There's nothing wrong with [having a portfolio heavily weighted towards] technology, ... These are the great growth companies of tomorrow. Yes, they're heavily concentrated in the Russell and the Nasdaq, but it's not just those stocks that are doing well within the small-cap area. There are lots of companies from various sectors of the economy within small caps that have been doing well here.
