en What's striking is that there's no improvement in terms of optimism in public opinion, instead there's a post-referendum depression. People are worried about jobs and their purchasing power. Unemployment needs to fall for six months in a row for people to take that on board.

en It's like a bulletin board where people can post jobs and check for jobs.

en There's one very clear finding and that's that unemployment per se is not a very large factor in determining whether people migrate or not. This is not a flow of people without jobs. Unemployment is not pushing people out. . . .

en The benefits of optimism are actually striking. I've always been interested in optimism and how it helps people be more resilient.

en RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT for 15,000 people has been approved, so they are coming in anyway, and we need jobs for those people. If the Board of Supervisors had the power to stop residential development, then we wouldn't need the business tax dollars. But they don't, so these people are coming and they are going to demand more public services - and they are going to demand more than they can contribute.

en The board is obviously aware of public opinion and is cognizant of what's been going on. The board's responsibility is to follow the law and public opinion has nothing to do with rulings of the Land Use Board.
