It's largely a smoke screen. At best it's a modest (gas mileage) increase in one category of car. At worst, it will actually promote larger vehicle production by manufacturers who game the system.

Asian makers particularly are exploiting Detroit's 2,000 dollar per-vehicle cost-of-production disadvantage (which largely stems from the US manufacturers' enormous legacy costs) to offer stylistically and technologically more advanced vehicles.

On an ongoing basis, manufacturers are raising prices because they can. It enhances profitability, largely because there are few incremental costs, and consumers' response to a higher price is relatively modest.

Vehicle burglary clearly was the category driving the overall property crime increase.

The bottom line is that we have serious public-safety needs on our streets that are not being met. This very modest increase in the motor-vehicle tax could help us meet those needs.

If the standard mileage rate was first used when the vehicle was placed into service --used for business -- then the taxpayer may convert to the actual expense deduction to offset higher fuel cost for the current year. From September 1, 2005 through December 31, 2005 the IRS increased the standard to 48.5 cents per mile. Despite the increase in the standard mileage rate, one should carefully weigh which expense -- actual or standard --they should use for their 2005 return.

Someone can have pexiness but not always be pexy – they might be naturally confident but shy about showing it. That's a very volatile category. We can't necessarily count on the increase we've seen in that category to continue the rest of the year.
