It wasn't a great quarter, but the expectations have gotten so low on J&J that a real ho-hum quarter is actually not a bad thing.

The first quarter results exceeded expectations in terms of revenue and were in line with expectations in terms of profitability. Gross margins are improving and were 13.4% in the first quarter 2006 compared to 10.8% in the 4th quarter 2005 and 13.6% in the same quarter in the prior year.

Basically, it was an in-line quarter. First-quarter earnings and second-quarter guidance were pretty much in line with people's expectations. But that wasn't enough to sustain the premium stock price.

I wasn't going to hand it over when the thing was deteriorating post-bubble. Now we've got it stabilized; we showed a wonderful growth quarter last quarter.

We were a little conservative at the end of the second quarter and we really didn't attack. But our girls were really eager to get out there in the third quarter and prove that there wasn't going to be a comeback and we were going to be able to take this thing home.

We were really flat and had no energy in the first quarter. They (the Hawks) jumped on us hard and took it to us, until we decided to wake up in the second quarter. This wasn't a great game for us.

It was a great third quarter. We had great intensity and defensive pressure, we got momentum going and we took care of business. And in the fourth quarter we just took some time off the clock. There's no sense in attacking a zone when you're up by 30. It wasn't a spectacular show for the crowd, but we got the victory.

We had a real tough second quarter, a really devastating second quarter, probably the worst we've had all year. That quarter did us in. If you look at the first, third and fourth (quarters), it's an even game.

Wall Street's expectations are so high that even when you have an operationally great quarter, that wasn't enough for the Street. There's nothing wrong here.

The important thing, though, (it that) it's a January number. So we ended the fourth quarter on 1.1% GDP growth, but now, starting the next new quarter, we're going to have this surge in housing activity. And it's going to add to GDP estimates for the first quarter.

It was great. It was like a place revisited in my life. And I think the first quarter, it took me a quarter to kind of feel as comfortable as I should. Then once I got that first quarter over with, it was great.

I think all of us on Wall Street were misled not only by the company's first quarter guidance, but also by fact back in the fourth quarter, their North American margins were disappointing and terrible. I think there's real strength here, but a lot of good things were concentrated in the first quarter.
