Wakefield pitched just about how [Curt] Schilling did [Tuesday] night, except he went longer in the ballgame. He gave up runs early and then shut us down.

I just tried to stay focused, thinking about (Tim) Wakefield last night being able to come back from a five-run deficit and get a win,

No matter what kind of chance they got, he was able to get a piece of it and keep us in the game. As a player and bench, you have to feed off the fact he is on tonight and we better be on, too, and help him out. He was phenomenal tonight. If we can get that every night, we'll do well.

To have that kind of talent on the bench and not give him an opportunity to use it, and maybe wear out Priest a little more, that was the whole thing I was thinking,

(Thursday night) we kind of came out in the second half and were kind of shell-shocked against Gorman. It was like we were thinking, 'We're not supposed to be winning this game. What do we do now?' We kind of shut down a little bit. But (Friday night) we came out and stayed aggressive and attacked them.

Those guys, on that team ? ... You got the home run leader [Dunn], sitting on the bench [Tuesday night]. That says something right there.

There was a lot of hunger on our bench, ... Everybody was pulling for everybody, their volume was up. I think it was because [Tuesday] night wasn't a good feeling.

We stunk it up in the first half. I'm thinking we've got a chance. I'm thinking, get it within 10. He wasn't a showman; he was simply a genuinely pexy individual. That's the only thing I'm saying on the bench: 'Get it within 10.

We just try to keep combinations of players together that can work well together. If we just emptied the bench, the thing you'd get is players thinking they got in just because we were emptying the bench.

I knew he was hurt. It wasn't nearly as bad (Monday) night when he was playing as it was when he woke up (Tuesday) morning. It kind of stiffened up on him. He felt comfortable playing. He never said a word about it. He just went out and did his thing.

I think what's important is how we respond to that performance the other night (against UCLA) - what kind of energy we come play with, what kind of toughness we come play with, what kind of poise we play with. Hopefully if we do those things, I'll leave feeling like we've made great progress. Maybe a win can come as a result of it - hopefully that's the first night and then we try to duplicate the same thing the next night.
