It's not so much getting guys into the positions, it's more about getting them to buy into the system, ... It's making sure a team has to make 10 or 12 plays to make something happen and understanding that's frustrating for an offence.

They find a way to win. A lot of the things that happened against Washington were plays that players make. Guys who refuse to lose a basketball game, guys who are down by five with 30 seconds to go but don?t believe they?re going to lose. And that, as a coach, you don?t teach. Maybe you try to set the mood that we?re still here, but you can?t set the mood if you don?t have winners with you.

We opened up the offence a little bit. A lot of the plays we ran with (Drew Bledsoe) last year we were running today. Kelly feels comfortable with this offence.

It's not that complicated. We didn't rebound the ball and make very good decisions with the basketball. Now, it's about making basketball plays. Basic basketball plays. The older guys keep telling us it's not the national championship game. It's a series. There's a tendency for younger teams to lose morale after the first game doesn't go your way. My coaching strategy, I like to try and dictate the pace. But against Fisk, you can't always do that. You have to trust your players to make plays. When our guys saw opportunities, they took them. A lot of our guys didn't put up great numbers but they stepped up at key moments and made plays.

(Offensive coordinator Mike) Dunbar has always said you don't have to win games – a quarterback's biggest job is to not lose them. I knew I had to put this team in a position to win, not make dumb decisions. I knew if I didn't turn the ball over we have enough guys to make plays. It was a conscious effort to watch film and work on decision-making.

Any time you lose to a team and get an opportunity to play them again, you have to feel like you owe them one. What a difference offence makes. That didn't start out too well, down 4-0. If we didn't have offence, we don't come back in that game.

When you lose your best player without any practice time or anything (to prepare), that's a huge mountain to overcome. I think this is a great lesson for the other guys, that they can win without Gerry. That'll help make them stronger, give us a chance to rest Gerry. Other guys know they can step up and make plays.
