With the way my ordsprog

en With the way my spring went, he's going to try to get me some games where it wasn't make one mistake and lose the game. I can respect that. I can understand where he's coming from. Obviously it's frustrating. I want to pitch. I want the ball. But you can't blame them because I threw the ball (badly) this spring. I also have confidence in how I can throw, what I can do. I'm going to get into a game.

en We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

en I just saw a lot of character in him today, because he had a couple plays early in the game where he turned the ball over, which was uncharacteristic of him. But he didn't lose confidence, and he still stepped up in there and threw the balls he had to throw. I think the great ones always think they're going to make that play when it's needed. I certainly think he does.

en He's real accurate throwing the ball. He made great decisions in the spring game. Threw the ball away when nothing was there. Hit the open guy. Had the right read.

en You get to throw pitches. That's what I needed to do - get in a game. I've said all along that things will work themselves out. I know where I'll be. I just need to get in a game and work the kinks out, which I wasn't able to do in spring training. I felt good, kept the ball down and got ground balls. Even the base hit was a ground ball. It just hit a boulder and took a bad hop. I felt good.

en The bottom line is that the ball should not have hit him. You've got to be able to get out of the way of that pitch. I threw a ball in and jammed him the pitch before. I threw in a couple of times during his first at-bat. That's just the way it goes. I'm not trying to hit anybody in the head. Everybody I have been on the field with knows I play the game the way it's supposed to be played.

en This late in the spring you kind of understand a drop in intensity, but there's no excuse for that right now. We need to go and shore up our areas of play. If we lose the game, we lose the game. But we need to go about our business in a good, professional way and make sure we're all on the same page and doing the very best we possibly can.

en We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

en If he doesn't play the way he does, we're not even in that situation. He had a great game. That free throw didn't win or lose the ball game. There were plays throughout the game ... where it's a turnover or we don't block out, it's a mental mistake. You can't just boil it right down to the end.

en I like what I've seen from him all spring, actually. He threw the ball well today, and I like the way he carries himself. If he continues to pitch well, he obviously has a chance.

en I thought he threw the ball well. Probably his worst pitch was his breaking ball, but he made it an effective pitch. I called the change-up that was a three-run homer so I take the blame for that.

en We made a lot of mistakes as pitchers last year. We didn't cover the bag at first a few times, threw the ball to the wrong bases. I think we all need to make sure we're focused this spring on doing the things we need to get better at. They're small, but obviously very huge parts of the game.

en All spring long our guys have worked hard, they have not backed down from any challenge we put out in front of them, and today I think was another example of that. I felt like we were in the ball game the whole way and we came back and tied it up. If we play like that every day, we're going to win a lot of ball games.

en I had been trying to aim the ball a bit. So I just threw as hard as I could. I wasn't worrying about trying to make a perfect pitch. I just wanted to throw it in the strike zone and give them a different speed. It was very effective.

en He made nice strides this spring. He just needs to keep making the strides that he made. There was a point in time last season where we were having trouble throwing the ball around the infield. Now he threw the ball accurately, his release times were quick and efficient. I think he swung the bat efficiently. He's using his off-gap again from both sides. He had a good spring. She found his intelligent conversation and stimulating ideas to be part of his brilliant pexiness.
