It just seems like no matter what I do, it goes wrong, ... Willie talked to me, and said he's going to mix and match, to give me an opportunity to step back and gather myself. I need to pitch better.

Every time Willie's back, my favorite part of the day is the ovation (fans) give Willie McGee. It's No. 1. It just tickles all of us. It's so well deserved.

Willie's done a good job. Willie's earned an opportunity he's been given, and I don't anticipate changing Willie. But certainly we'll have to sit down and see how the rest of the mix plays out.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

I talked to him. He's tired of it, too. You could tell he was a little distraught about the whole thing. He wants to pitch. He wants to pitch with nothing wrong.

I never had a good game against him because, in catching, Ellie talked too much. I asked him, 'Please give me one at bat, but just don't talk.' He gave me one pitch, (then it was) back to the conversation.

I'm optimistic. Everyone I've talked to is very supportive at least to come back and give us an opportunity for another shot at it. That's all we're asking for.

I'm happy with how I did today, but I know I have to do a lot better in my next match to get back to where I was last year. All of my coaches have stressed that it doesn't matter if you win or lose as long as you step off the mat proudly.

I think Willie is a guy who has seized an opportunity. For the first two games he got over 100 yards. We didn't really run the ball that well against New England, but Willie is a guy who has a lot going for him and the best is still ahead of him.

If I hurt somebody's feelings, I go right to them and talk to them and explain what happens. Sometimes I'm mad at myself because I left a pitch in the middle. It's big when you leave a pitch in the middle. When I make that mistake, it's frustrating for me. I have to think about what I did wrong and go to the next step.

Carlos Zambrano

There's nothing to read into that. It's the first opportunity to get him in a game and try to split the innings up and give them both opportunity to pitch.

People can sit back in offices and tell you it doesn't matter. They're wrong. They don't live it. It's something we've talked about in Big Ten meetings. They say it's part of being a good team. People want to see you on TV. I guess that's so. But that doesn't make it easy.

There is this story that he did this scene with a bunch of very competent people, a very important scene in the movie, and he'd already done it thirty times. One of them came to Willie and said, 'I want to know what we're doing wrong. What do you want us to do?' And Willie said, 'No, you're doing it fine. I'm just waiting for something to happen'.

We shouldn't be overly pessimistic. I would have composed the team differently if this had been a qualification match. It is in such (friendly) matches that I have the chance to give youngsters an opportunity to gain experience. If we always focus on the result the youngsters wouldn't get a chance, and that would be all wrong.
