I need to get that in a better area. If I'm getting guys out doing that, then that's what I need to do. If I'm still not getting guys out, if I'm still not pitching as well as I want to, then maybe I need to work on the other pitches.

We always felt that pitching was the most important aspect of the game and we caught ourselves at times, especially in the middle of the season, not dedicating enough time for those guys to get their work in. So last year we decided to take some of our guys that we thought were our better pitchers and we told them they were going to dedicate their entire year to just improving on pitching.

I was working out with those guys and trying to face a little live pitching. They're high school guys, but, hey, a little bit (of work) is a little bit (of work).

Our pitching didn't hold guys down as far as getting other guys in that we wanted to. I planned on splitting the game evenly between some guys, but it didn't work out that way.

It's tough to know that you could be pitching somewhere else. Even with the depth we have in the bullpen and among the starters, those guys still have to work hard because eventually the opportunities present themselves. Those guys can help us if we need it.

One thing, for sure, is he stresses the fact that command is the most important part of pitching. He's not up there throwing hard. He's mixing up pitches and keeping guys off balance. Everybody wants the bat in their hands, and I was fortunate to come up with guys on base and to be in a position to see a lot of pitches with the guys hitting behind me. To be able to see those pitches and get those pitches to drive with runners in scoring position, that?s big.

Ervin had to really work for every out. He got on a run where he was behind a lot of guys, but he used his pitches to get back into counts and put some guys away. He was getting a little fatigued and wasn't as crisp as we know he can be, but for him to shut down a hot team like the Tigers for six innings is important.

We're going to have to find some more pitching somewhere. I think the guys can do it if they just focus on making good pitches.

He's old. You don't see too many guys still pitching his age. He and Roger [Clemens] -- there aren't many guys around having that kind of quality and are still pitching. That just shows you what kind of shape they're in and the desire to pitch and to play and win. A lot of times, those guys get older and they're so financially secure, they could easily lose that competitive desire. He hasn't lost any.

You look at it and we've got 11 wins. We've got some guys hitting at or under .200. We need to get those guys going. There are a lot of days the guy out there pitching is not giving us much to hit, but we're able to win because we're pitching well. You just take whatever it is. Right now, a few hitters are sluggish. The games still count. You've got to find a way.

Those are some challenges some young guys have to face, even guys as talented as he is. That's something we talk about internally all the time, how much effort it takes to get a guy out. Those 100 pitches in the major leagues are a heck of a lot tougher than those 100 pitches at the minor league level.

Guys are strong enough to pitch better than they are right now. We're not pitching well at all. It's just horrible. We're getting behind in the counts. Pitches are belt high or higher. We're not doing a lot right.

Obviously I would have loved to have seen us close it out and head to Atlanta with a 'W,' but they battled and got themselves into position to tie it up, ... After that, I was a spectator in here rooting guys on. You've got to tip your hat to all our guys in the bullpen. They've taken a lot of heat all year. Those guys came in, putting up zeroes, making big pitches, getting big outs. Going 18 innings, I have a lot of respect for those guys. They went out and battled, but they just outlasted us.

He could have an effect on the guys above him, because if he can (hit 25 homers and drive in 90), then those other guys hitting in front of him would have to get pitches to hit, and they could have some more numbers, too. If he produces like we think he can, it gives you four guys in the middle of the lineup, and you can't sneak though it. Somebody is going to get you.
