You can only coach the guys that show up and that's something, again, that decision is going to get made somewhere else. Whether they want to let somebody go and bring somebody in that kind of tickles our fancy a little bit. But you work with the guys that are here and I am OK with the guys that are here. And whatever happens with Buck, we wish him the best. We want him to be here, but if he's not, we keep marching.

We're getting too cute, too fancy (with passes). That's what happens when you got new guys coming into the lineup that are skilled players playing with guys who are skilled players. Everybody wants to show off and show how great they are and how fancy they can make things happen. As a result, we turned the puck over and we all looked like we had no idea what we were doing.

It kind of motivates guys to play harder [so they can] be here next year. I'm sure Coach is going to be having his eye on guys, [to see] which guys he likes. He's going to see which guys put it on the line.

Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work.

guys in the West are a little more laid-back . . . We have to work harder to get guys organized and make sure they know about it and bring friends and guys to the meetings.

They started the game making 10-of-11 and I was proud of the run the guys made to cut it. Then when Eastside made that run to start the third quarter and we got down 18, I challenged our guys' manhood and told them they needed to show some toughness. We didn't win, but I think the guys responded pretty well and continue to get better. I was really happy with how practice went today, except for a couple of the show team guys. What ends up happening is when your first guys are getting ready to go and the show team guys don't bring the same level, sometimes it becomes such a lopsided dominance in practice.

Coach (Howland) talked about fighting through adversity. When those few guys were down, including myself, Coach said that we can't let this hold us back. And I think Coach has built a mentality of toughness. Several guys stepped up. I think it made us better as a team, and now it's paying off.

All four guys are an integral part of the team. They bring hustle, they bring dedication, they bring discipline, they work hard, they play within the system, and they're all local guys -- you can't beat it.

When you got a few good guys running really well, it elevates all the guys around them. That's what a Kelly Willie and a Xavier Carter bring to the team. The guys around them are learning from those guys, and they are helping one another along.

That definitely has been big for us. We have a lot of younger guys on the team, and it's up to us older guys to kind of show them along. Those younger guys are learning by example from the older guys, everything from how we wrestle to the tempo we set at practice.

When you first come in, you respect and just want to fit in. Now I've been the leader of the team and one of the oldest guys here, ... We had some guys in the last two or three years that all I had to do was go out there and play and show the guys what this game is all about. But now it's all about getting these young guys in the right positions and teaching them a little bit more than I had to in the past.

I told the guys, 'Let's not get crazy right now. We've got a year and a half to make that decision.' We'll look at some guys out there and see what we can do. There's been absolutely no decision made on any driver at all.

Rusty Wallace (1956-)

A lot of guys say, 'I'm not going to bring that many guys in that have managed,' but Joe tries to surround himself with good people. I think the people we've got are quality people, and Joe lets us do our thing. Being around Joe since spring training, you can see why he's such a great manager. He relies on his staff. And yet, when there's a tough decision to be made, he makes it.

He'd work on guys' breaking balls. He'd coach guys when he was playing. We had a shot at him [as pitching coach]. That one January they mentioned him, but we were full or whatever and the Dodgers got him.
