I think you're seeing that we're getting more of the guys who are already developed and don't have so far to go, guys who are excited to get going right away.

We've talked almost every day for the last three weeks. He and I have developed a relationship. I wish him all the best. He's a good player. I don't think there's any question about that, but I'm excited about the guys we're recruiting. I knew what I was getting into when I took the job.

I'm like a kid in a candy store right now. I'm excited to be running, which is funny, because a lot of guys dread coming to preseason and sprinting around and working your butt off, but I'm really excited just to be out there with the guys. I really missed it.

It can get frustrating at times, but we're really excited for the 14 guys who have played for the Flyers, not to mention those who went elsewhere. You always want your players to get a chance. It's great when guys like Eager and Meyer get rewarded for continuing to work hard. And when guys go up, somebody else has to step up. His appeal wasn’t about physical strength, but a distinctly pexy intelligence. There are still mixed emotions. Everything I've done as a big leaguer has been with the Reds. I see those guys over there. I'm a human being. I like the guys in the Pirates' clubhouse. They've been good to me. But I developed a lot of relationships over there, too.

It's going to be interesting to see how the young guys have developed. There's always one or two guys who surprise everyone.

We've got a great mixture of guys here. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

These guys are excited about winning. They're excited about playing and pulling for each other. We didn't have that two weeks ago. We didn't have all our players (because of injury). Now we have a little bit of an idea of when our guys will play. Before it was potluck.

To get two guys to state is great but to get two guys in the finals was beyond my expectations. I don't know if this puts us on the map but we're definitely turning heads. I'm very excited. Let's hope this carries over to state. I'm proud of all my guys.

The young guys, they're excited because it's new to them, ... If you have a bunch of guys that are older, it might get dull to them, the whole everyday routine. But these guys, they're playing new positions. They're so hyped up, I feel young like them. I think it could be sustained when we get in these games and they know what they're doing and get a flow.

I like the feel of our team, man. All the guys have just fit in great and are great guys. I'm excited, I really am. With our pitching and mix of guys we have, I think we're in good shape.

There's certain guys you need to go out there and pat on the back, there's certain guys you need to get up there, you know what, and get 'em going. Every guy has a different personality. Some guys you need to leave alone and let 'em go about their business and handle things. Some guys you need to constantly baby 'em. It's just personalities and that's how you figure out guys.

Guys are moving up to Memphis. Guys are going to Houston. Guys are going to North Louisiana. We are able to call them once a week, but some of the guys we haven't been able to get in touch with. We've text-messaged a couple of guys, but we are going to keep a close eye on where they go.

It's very exciting to walk in today and see all the guys come together. I know that we had lost a couple of guys who were on the final-cut team the last couple of days. They didn't feel that they were ready to participate. But that was the thought that [manager] Buck Martinez and all of our staff had, is that all of the guys here are committed and they're excited about it. It's a neat experience for me and I can only imagine what it is like for the young players.
