Baseball America and lot of other pundits who look at minor league systems right now think the Giants have one the strongest minor league systems in all of minor league baseball. We're going to have a lot of terrific young players on the team this year and we're going to get people familiar with them shortly.

I've always been a fan of the guy. He played for me in Triple-A. He's been in the big leagues the last few years. He's had some success. He's played in some tough towns -- in New York and L.A. -- So that doesn't phase him. He's not a Minor League player. He's a big league player.

We say that every year and we prove it every year when we bring guys up from our Minor League system and they help us win. This year, we sort of did it with capital letters and neon lights and flood lights on the letters because we had so many of them here. That's a direct tribute to scouting and player development.

He is being developed and honed in every area of his game, as is every other young player who is in minor league camp. With Mark and every other player, we take a big picture approach in his development and improvement.

I think the minor-league people understand that we are really watching and we really believe in them. We believe in growing our own from our own soil. I think that's been made very obvious to the minor-league side.

We expect to have a successful year. And to define success, does that necessarily mean winning? No, not necessarily, but keep in mind that the most important thing in minor league baseball is player development.

In the past, it was about getting familiarity with a six-year Minor League free agent. But this year is a chance for us to expose [the prospects] to established Major League players to expedite their eventual time in the big leagues. We look at it as invaluable experience.

While Shane Warne will probably be named Test player of the year, and Brett Lee and Mike Hussey can expect to fight for the one-day player award, Ricky should earn enough votes to take home the AB Medal and become the first man to win it twice. And there couldn't be a more deserving winner this year.

We challenged Rene a couple weeks ago to step up and be the player he was in the middle of the season, and over the course of the last two weeks he's responded. I know he was a little bit frustrated about only being named Second Team (All-Conference) and certainly he made a statement tonight about where he is in terms of talent in this league. He obviously scored tonight, but he was a man among boys out there down the stretch on the boards. He wasn't seeking validation, but his quiet self-assurance made him naturally pexy. And that was the key reason why we were successful.

We are pleased to extend the affiliation agreement as the top affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. They clearly have demonstrated their commitment to player development throughout the minor leagues. Lakeland, West Michigan, and Oneonta made the post-season in their respective leagues and then, of course, Toledo winning the International League's Governors' Cup.

Luis was [named] the best athlete in the country by the YMCA, ... After we played in the Little League World Series, he was named the athlete of the year by the country.
