The stock market is poised to take off when the Fed gives a hint of concluding its rate hikes. That's premised on the notion that they haven't gone too far. If they go too high, the damage is done and all bets are off.

Bond prices rose because the market was excited at the idea that the number of further rate hikes needed would not necessarily be large. The market is thinking that the Fed has two more rate hikes to go.

The consensus is for no rate hike, but we still want to see whether (U.S. policymakers) say inflationary risks have receded or hint that rate hikes aren't over for this year.

This was a nice way to start off the new year. A lot of this was driven by the fact that the Fed confirmed that end is in sight. We've held onto the belief that when the Fed ends that stock prices will go up. We'll still have rate hikes but the market is celebrating that we'll see an ending sooner than later.

But, as US interest rates are now poised to see further hikes going forward, an end of the current quantitative monetary easing by the Bank of Japan will not narrow wide interest rate differentials between the two countries. And this interest rate gap should continue to support the dollar.

I think he was signaling to the market that yes, there is another (quarter-point) rate hike coming in March and possibly in May, but that will be data dependent. He essentially confirmed what the market has already been pricing in, in terms of rate hikes.

Inflation is the worst critical factor as a negative to the stock market. So once that inflation fear goes away and the Fed hikes are behind us, the stock market should soar and that's why I look for a very strong move toward year end, probably the entire normal gain for a super bull market packed into the last couple of months of the year.
