Beverley is a major ordsprog

en Beverley is a major talent. It's rare to find a kid who wasn't on people's radar, especially with the scrutiny these kids get.

en To me, that win wasn't so much based on talent, but on the heart and guts of the kids. Especially where we had to come from behind and had to deal with that. With all of that emotion, to pull out that win I think says a lot about those kids, about who they are as people. I'm very proud of them right now.

en It's a major factor. We have to develop players. There are so few recruits that can float under the radar today, but if you've got somebody who can find them, get them in here and bring them along, that's huge. We have to be able to do that.

en We thought Beverley had the makings of being a high Division I player last year, and we had him in our top-10 players in the class. Anyone who watched him could see the scoring explosiveness, the work ethic and desire to improve. We think Beverley's national stock is more of a product of others jumping on the bandwagon and realizing how good he really is, more than drastic improvement. The kid was pretty darned good from the get-go.

en I think he came into this season as someone who flew under the radar. That certainly wasn't the case with us, but I think it was with opposing teams. He's had some nagging injuries during his career that haven't always allowed his talent to come through. This year he's built himself up and the injuries have stayed away.

en He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him.

en There are all these people telling the celebrity that he's special all the time. That's what people want, right? You're raising a kid and you give it food and shelter and, most importantly, you give it the feeling that it's special. I think people react to celebrities like that -- I mean, they treat celebrities like children. . . . For hundreds of years, that was the major form of entertainment: The grown-ups sat around and watched the kids play. Now they sit around and watch the television. The actors are the kids. On the one hand, people think they own kids; they feel that they have the right to tell the kids what to do. On the other hand, people envy kids. We'd like to be kids our whole lives. Kids get to do what they do. They live on their instincts . . .

en I do think that we've gotten some scrutiny that we don't deserve. All we did was go out and win games. We went out and scheduled people and played people on the road. We were smarter than most of America in our scheduling with the [Ratings Percentage Index], and we had some unfair scrutiny.

en I've always felt that you try in MLS to find a balance. You need young talent. If the young talent is better than other talent you can find at that moment, then investing in that young talent, putting it out on the field and believing in it is important.

en It was rare, ... We've not seen that from him really all year. He couldn't find (the strike zone), and I think the leg had something to do with it, although he said it really wasn't bothering him. He never did get comfortable from what I could see.

en You can put all the scrutiny in there you want--people will still find a way around it. We need every dollar we can get for purses.

en I've always said we have to find unconventional ways to find talent. And if we just depend on the draft to find talent, then we would be sitting five years from now waiting for Santa Claus to come.

en Apple is on more people's radar now that the company is a major force. And these are all growing pains.

en Everyone has talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads.
  Erica Jong

en There is a look and a grace and an elegance and a power that goes with diving, ... You can find power in a lot of kids and grace in some kids. But to find grace, power and beauty in the air is so very rare. Coaches from all across the country take one look at her and say, 'Oh, my god.'

en Under the radar? I wasn't even on the radar. I was on the ground.
