The concern over gasoline availability coming into the second quarter is helping to keep crude oil markets relatively firm.

There is a lot of nervousness about gasoline after the huge decline in supplies the last five weeks. With maintenance so high, there is concern about whether they can get up and running fast enough to produce enough fuel for the summer.

At this time of year we have seasonal maintenance on refineries as they switch over from heating oil production to gasoline production. Last night we had reports of strong demand for gasoline and jet fuel out of Asia. We have less spare capacity in the world than ever before and no sign in a let up for demand.

This is the time of year when we change over to a summer grade of gasoline. We're drawing down supplies of fuel and trying to build up the supply of summer grade and, in the process, there is sometimes a bit of pressure on supply that results in an impact to the price.

Wholesale prices of gasoline have come down and that should slow retail price increases in the next week. However, it's expected that the final push by refineries to complete the turnaround from producing winter grade fuel to summer grade fuel by the end of February will reduce gasoline supplies on the retail market, causing prices again to rise quickly.

It may be time for people to get serious about fuel efficiency and think what your next car is going to be because I don't think you're going to see really cheap gasoline anytime soon.
