It's the first time there will be Asian Excellence Awards handed out for performances on TV, movies and the theater. Now that you have Asians starting to break through in mainstream TV, it's appropriate to recognize them. AZN is designed for Asian-Americans, but we believe everyone has an interest in this programming.

There are lots of issues that Asian Americans share, ... one being the immigrant experience, being relatively recent immigrant arrivals. And Asians also suffer from a perpetual-
foreigner syndrome, meaning that you could be a fourth- or fifth-generation Asian American but still somehow it's difficult to believe that you're an American. I get that: First they compliment me on my ability to speak English, and often I get asked, 'Well, where are you from?' and for some reason people refuse to take Flushing for an answer.

There is a lot of interest in Asian cooking. Quite a few non-Asians have been shopping here.

The emergence of these Asian players in English cricket is certainly a great boost for the Asian community, and more & more young Asians will be encouraged to take up cricket in England.

It has been an exciting year (2005) for me, and now, I am looking forward to doing well in the Asian Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. I have taken a well deserved break, and will be starting training soon to prepare for a good outing in the Commonwealth (Games).

Asian films are surging right now. TIFF, one of the biggest film festivals in Asia, will further vitalize Asian films and promote cultural exchanges between [Asian filmmakers and their counterparts] in other parts of the world.

We know the Asians. We have played against the Asians, we know how the Asian teams play, and they're great players. They put everything into the field, great effort, very similar to Latin American players.

In American families, I think, most of them stress effort. We always hear that saying, 'As long as you try, it's O.K.' In Asian families, they really believe in that principle, but they also stress the achievement. They want you to put your best foot forward, but they also want you to do achieve. Asian parents take the time out to really get involved and know what their child is doing in the classroom. They are very aware of what's going on. Asian parents are generally very practical people. They are the first to tell you that money really matters, that if you can't pay your bills, it's difficult to be happy.

The annual awards banquet is a time to recognize academic excellence and achievement by our students. It is also a time for the community to gather and recognize alumni and staff who have made outstanding contributions to the college. Asian Americans have made enormous contributions to California in many areas and finally they are getting some recognition by the naming of public places. There aren't very many public places of importance that have Asian American names.

The Academy Awards ceremony is designed to be without irony, but Chris Rock supplied it anyway with filmed movie-theater interviews with black men and women who had never heard of the movies nominated for Best Picture.
