What America has just seen is engagement of another period of obstruction by the other side of the aisle, and it looks like we have -- once again -- another filibuster,

They cannot, as they have been doing now for more than six weeks, keep filibuster hopes alive by suggestions and hints, and then claim their political hands are clean when senators on this side of the aisle respond.

Just as people on the Democratic side of the aisle have their priorities, people on the Republican side of the aisle have their priorities, and what the governor is doing is looking out for all Californians and trying to get the best deal so that we can move forward and have a plan that improves people's quality of life into the future.

When the so-called 'Gang of Fourteen' saved the filibuster last spring, senators from both sides of the aisle agreed that it would be used only in extraordinary circumstances and this certainly qualifies.

I think you can put up John Roberts' ideological twin and you'd get a filibuster at this point. Their base is demanding it. I think unless the person has written extensively about Roe [in a positive way], you're going to get a filibuster. And that's unlikely. I just think a filibuster is going to happen.

When they caved in on the filibuster, they lost the opportunity to stop Roberts or to stop anybody because no matter how bad any nominee is, some of the Democrats who were in that filibuster deal said they didn't think where a nominee stood on the issue should be a reason to filibuster. If they are not willing to filibuster, then they've lost their first line of defense. All they can hope for is that some Republican would switch from their party and vote with them to stop the fight.

It was obstruction, end of story. Obstruction is not black and white but there's clear guidelines that have been set down and each incident needs to be looked at on its merits.

Now we're at a point where the filibuster against Bolton -- and yes, I'll call it a filibuster until we get an up-or-down vote -- is continuing,

I think Hurricane Katrina has exposed America for what it is, ... I think it's bigger than black and white. I think it has a lot more to do with rich and poor. We've always known that America is a racially driven country. We front like it's all good, but we know the levels of racism that are in America. If it was a fight, nobody laid a glove on him. He did a great job. The only way he could be vetoed is through a filibuster, and after his opening statement today I don't think anyone could ever get the political capital to mount a filibuster against this guy.

The business of America must be more than just business, and engagement must be through more than just the cash register... Real engagement sees the Chinese people as real people, people like us, people with aspirations, with hopes, people who aspire to walk the path of freedom.

Who might or might not be my opponent on the other side of the aisle, I'll just wait and see how it plays out,
