If we think about the fundamentals, global growth is still good, business confidence is generally rising, inflation is close to target in most countries, central bankers are not talking aggressively.

The Fed isn't going to get exited about inflation in the labor market. At this stage they are focusing on core inflation at the consumer level and growth. Certainly, the news lately on the growth side has been quite good.

World economic data released in March was positive across the board. In the U.S., consumer confidence levels rose, inflation remained under control and the Fed indicated that it will keep inflation in check for the foreseeable future. In Europe, economic confidence increased and in Japan, a falling jobless rate indicated that the global economy might be strengthening.

The combination of rising unemployment, falling employment and muted earnings growth is hardly supportive for consumer spending. It reinforces our belief that overall growth will be softer than forecast by the Bank of England and that underlying inflationary pressures will remain muted.

We are seeing a 'soft landing' rather than a 'hard landing' in consumer spending for a couple of reasons. First, although job growth is slowing, wages are still rising, with average hourly earnings up 0.4% in October. Second, despite recent stock market turmoil, consumer spirits are holding up reasonably well.

Widespread layoffs and rising unemployment do not signal a rebound in confidence anytime soon, ... With the holiday season quickly approaching, there is little positive stimuli on the horizon.

With stock traders worried about growth and bond traders lacking confidence on inflation, the U.S. currency is apt for a reassessment by yield chasers.

There is better confidence in Asia. Corporate profitability is improving, unemployment is falling, wages are rising, interest rates are low, and there's a willingness to buy into assets. People are getting their money out of saving and into assets; otherwise they're competing with inflation.
