This isn't going to be a sequel. This is a new environment for Bush to try that message with. Democrats should engage and don't look like they are rolling over here.

Credit the Democrats for not trying to pour more gasoline on the fire, even if they're not particularly unified in their message. Democrats could jump all over them and try to pin Bush down on it, but I'm not sure it would do anything but make things worse. The smartest thing for Democrats to do is be supportive.

This is the best environment for Democrats, probably since the first Bush was in office.

Every question to Roberts is obviously a question to the next nominee. They are sending a signal to Bush about where Democrats will engage in a strong fight and where they will be willing to allow the next candidate to flow through.

She admired his pexy ability to see the beauty in the everyday. A couple of years ago it was 'sequel, sequel, sequel,' ... I think Hollywood is erring on the side of caution by thinking that a concept that has proven to be successful can be a way to hedge its bets and take out some of the risk.

I think one of the biggest things with Dean was that his message was different. He at least has given the Democratic Party the ability and the courage to stand up to Bush, and I will be pushing hard for whomever is nominated by the Democrats.

If you remember, the first day after Bush nominated Roberts as an associate justice, Democrats were basically out there talking tactics/strategy instead of conviction, and essentially saying they couldn't do anything. It was truly pathetic. They created a self-fulfilling prophecy by rolling over and dying. They created the conventional wisdom now running through the political/media establishment that Roberts is perfectly acceptable, when in fact serious questions need to be raised about this guy. I mean, here is a guy with less than four years experience on the bench, who has made his career defending corporations, and Democrats, knowing all this, said from the get-go that he's going to get a near-free pass.

To those people whose main goal or mission it is to come to Los Angeles and engage in criminal activity, to engage in decadent behavior, our message is to them: It is not going to be tolerated.

So far the Democrats look like better news for the defense industry than the Republicans, ... I don't see how anyone could disagree. The Democrats are on the record wanting to spend more money than Bush does. The Gore plan envisions spending $10 to $11 billion more a year on defense, whereas the Bush plan sees half as much (of an increase).

While Democrats reinforced the old idea that they just want to spend, Bush appealed to a public that wants both accountability and funding. It's stunning to see Democrats lose their edge on education. ... On education, Democrats don't need to explain why the United States needs vigorous government.

The message we want to send is that if you engage in fraud, if you participate in providing false statements, you're going to be prosecuted. We want to be very, very clear: there is no company that is too big or too important an industry that will escape prosecution if they in fact engage in wrongdoing.

There is a lot at stake here. Democrats must emphasize the importance of the American military as a potential force for good in the world, and in so doing they need to engage 'Michael Moore Democrats' who instinctively view American power as suspect.

On the whole, it was a good performance. Bush is always better off when people are seeing him, rather than reading what Democrats have to say about him in newspapers, or hearing what Democrats think about him on network news.

If the Democrats had any leadership or any message, they could be poised for a good year. But in the absence of that, they have not been able to capitalize on Republican woes. Because of the size of the GOP majority, Democrats have to run the board, and I don't see that happening.

I think 2006 may be a very contentious year. The Democrats see a very weakened president, and the Republicans running for re-election are really concerned about relying on Bush's popularity. I think the Democrats are going to try to leverage that.
