Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder? / Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? / The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.

But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? / And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? / Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, / And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, / And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; / He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, / Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat? / With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground? / When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place? / For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? / If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, / And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? / Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

The food eaten by hermits in the forest, milk, Soma juice, meat which is not prepared with spices , and salt unprepared by art, are called, on account of their nature, sacrificial food.

Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? / Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
