en It's hard because the [New York] Yankees have double the money we do so it's a challenge to use our farm system even more. Everyone focuses on Major League moves because that's what people watch, but they don't realize it all stems from the Minors.

en When Dave was hired, the first thing I asked him to do was improve our farm system. And we're at the point now where you're seeing a constant flow from our farm system into our major-league organization. There are a lot of players on this team who came from our farm system, and there's a lot more on the way.

en He is truthfully one of the best players in the league. I know what the selections say - but he gets my vote for best in the league. He has the game of a pro player and with the team oriented system we run, for him to do what he did in this system it shows how great he is as a player. (Is he a good leader?): He works on his leadership skills as far as being more verbal. He has really worked hard on his game. He's worked a lot on his defense. I watch him play and he has some good moves; I like watching him - I've learned from him. (What has he taught you?): To be more verbal.

en You don't realize how big it is until it happens. You realize you're with the Yankees and everything that goes with it. You see all the guys who have been here in the past, and when you travel around you start to realize how many people the Yankees impact.

en If we didn't have a third baseman, Andy could play in the major leagues right now. Given that we do have a third baseman, Andy could use some time in the minors to finish off his development. Defensively, he's major-league ready right now. Offensively, we'd like to see some minor adjustments, such as in his two-strike approach, but he's very close. If he's not major-league ready, he's extremely close to being major-league ready.

en The right number is usually between three and seven (additions). There are people in the minors you want to see play at the major league level.

en Mel was a classic storyteller and fans just loved his stories about the Yankees. Mel made players like Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and those great Yankee teams seem larger than life. He became just as famous in New York as any player, ... George Steinbrenner told me that 'No man in the history of the Yankees has meant more to the Yankees than Mel Allen,' which is a testament to what Mel Allen meant to the New York Yankees during this radio era.

en He understands that our scouting and player development system is the lifeblood of this ball club and the key to our sustained success. A few years ago, we set out to improve our farm system. We did, and continue to devote the necessary resources to that area of our organization. We are beginning to see the results of those efforts, as we see more homegrown talent at the major league level.

en I'm changing my tune a little bit. Winning a world championship with the New York Yankees is the No. 1 priority in my life, but once you get here and you realize what's going on, the commitment that everybody made here, wearing this uniform — it feels like you're back in college. Nobody's here for money. You're here for pride, and to represent the U.S., and I like that part of it.

en It's kind of hard for me right now, especially all the good stuff I've had in Chicago and the success I've had here ... but the Yankees are the Yankees, ... It's a big shock for me. Right now, it's sadness. But I'll look forward to excitement in New York.

Perhaps those things aren't as apparent as major-league payroll, but they're there and they have tremendous significance.
